He has had this conversation forty times and it has not happened yet.
In the car. In the shower. Once, embarrassingly, out loud at a red light with a woman in the next lane watching him. In bed at ten past one when he had promised himself he would not.
It is a real thing. It is on Thursday. It is not a catastrophe and it is not nothing, and it matters, and it is going to be uncomfortable, and it is the sort of thing that goes better or worse depending on how the first ninety seconds land.
Eleven days he has been carrying it.
And here is the thing that is actually bothering him, which is not the conversation.
He genuinely wants to hand it to God. He is not being poetic. He would put it down at the back door tonight and go in and sleep if he knew how.
And every way he has been shown looks like a machine with a slot in it.
Pray this specific thing. Say it out loud this many times. Get the wording right. Declare it in the morning and again at night. Do not say the negative version or you will undo it. Give something first. Fast something first. And underneath all of it, the quiet suggestion that if the thing goes badly on Thursday, it will be because he did not operate it properly.
He has done all of that at one time or another and it did not feel like trusting anybody. It felt like getting the settings right.
And he stood at his own back door tonight with a mug going cold in his hand and thought: I do not want a mechanism. I want a Father, and I do not know where the door is.
And you know that exactly, because you have been handed methods when what you wanted was somebody to hand it to.

A Father is not a mechanism, and He is not a harder mechanism either
Let us settle what governs this page. Nothing on it is being asked of you, there is no appeal at the bottom, and there are no steps in it anywhere.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in the famous sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who lets a reader hear that verb land where it actually lands.
Here it is, in its own room:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Said to a whole nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had gone empty and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating, and the striking thing about it, once you have seen it, is that God is talking there the way a father talks. Come and see whether I am who you have decided I am. It is the Holy Spirit who does the carrying here, which is what separates a word being spoken over you from a phrase being repeated at you.
Now the difference you have been standing in the doorway of, because it is a real difference and it is worth naming properly.
A mechanism is not evil. A mechanism is safe. That is its appeal, and there is no point pretending otherwise. If a thing works by operation, then it is predictable, and if it is predictable then it is under your control, and if you get the settings right nothing can go wrong that is not your fault. That last clause is the price, and it is a very heavy price, and it is exactly what has been sitting on you at ten past one in the morning.
A Father is not predictable in that way. A Father is trustworthy, which is a different property altogether, and it does not come from your operation of Him. It comes from what He is like.
You are dealing with a Father and not a system, and that means nothing depends on your getting the wording right. Jesus made the comparison Himself and He made it out of ordinary fathers: which of you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a serpent, or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion (Luke 11:11). He then says, if you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. There are no steps in that. There is no technique. There is a child asking and a Father who is not the sort of person who hands over a scorpion. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and gets it as far as a back door with a cold mug in it.
And look at what He says about the words themselves.
You do not have to get it right, and He was never waiting on your phrasing. It is written that your Father knows what you need before you ask Him (Matthew 6:8). That sentence was said, specifically, to people who had been taught to think that many words and correct forms improved the odds. And it is written that the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26), which means that on the day the wording fails entirely, somebody else in the room is doing the speaking. His Spirit is what makes that a relief rather than a doctrine.
Now the thing underneath the machine, which is the part that has been costing you sleep.
Nothing on Thursday is going to hinge on how well you operated something, and God has not arranged your life as an examination of your technique. It is written that as a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him, for He knows our frame, He remembers that we are dust (Psalm 103:13). He remembers. He is not surprised by a man rehearsing at a red light. He was never going to hold that against him. The Spirit is the one who makes that stop being an idea and start being a floor.
And here is where the trusting actually goes, because this is not an article about a feeling.
Trust is not a technique and it does not have steps, so nobody here is going to give you any. What it has is an object. You hand one real thing over, out loud, to somebody, and then you go to bed.
Not money. Nothing on this site will ever ask you for that or route anything anywhere, including here. One real thing: the conversation on Thursday, the first ninety seconds of it, the version of yourself that turns up to it.
You are owed nothing for trusting Him and that is what makes it trust rather than a transaction. It is written that we have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, Abba, Father (Romans 8:15). That is not the vocabulary of a customer. Nobody says Abba to a machine. His Spirit is the one who puts that word in a man's mouth at a back door, and it is worth noticing that Paul says the Spirit does it, not that you must produce it.
And one last thing, for the man who has tried all the methods and found them cold.
If you find this hard, you are not failing at it. Trusting is not a skill you are being marked on, and finding it difficult is not evidence about your faith. It is evidence that you have been handed machinery for years by people who mostly meant well, and machinery is heavy, and you have been carrying it.
So stand at the back door and put the mug down.
You are not operating anything. There is no setting to get right, no wording that unlocks it, and nothing that goes wrong on Thursday because of a sentence you did or did not say on Tuesday.
There is a Father, and there is one real thing in your hands, and there is a bench.
Leave it with Him. Then go in.
Nothing is required of you for that to be true, and nothing is owed to you for doing it, and both of those are the reason it is trust and not a transaction.
You are trusting a Father with Thursday and you are not operating a mechanism that owes you an outcome. It is written, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him (Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit is what is given, and He is not the reward for eleven days of rehearsing.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at whatever door you are standing at. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than operated by you, which is exactly what this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to what you have been carrying, then to the thing you have quietly suspected about yourself, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does this week is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Rehearsal I have been running for eleven days, you are not going into Thursday with me. My Father knows what I need before I ask Him, so there is nothing here to get word perfect and nothing to rehearse at a red light.
- Suspicion that if this goes badly it will be because I did not operate something properly, you are not staying at this back door. It is written that He knows my frame and remembers that I am dust, and the Spirit is the One who makes that compassion rather than an allowance.
- Father, You are not a mechanism and I am not working one, and I am handing You Thursday out loud and going to bed. I do this in the name of Jesus and I am owed nothing for it, because it is on the bench and it never crossed my mind to ask whether You were any good at it.
