Every Time The Windows Opened

He has done a thing tonight that he has genuinely never done in his life, and he is a man of fifty who has been in church since he was born.

He looked the phrase up.

That is all. He got the concordance down, the one his father-in-law gave him that he has used four times, and he looked up every place in the Bible where the windows of heaven are mentioned or where the sky opens, and he wrote them in a notebook, and it took him about forty minutes, and there are not very many of them.

And he is sitting at the table now with the lamp on and everybody else in bed and he cannot quite get his breath.

Because he has heard that phrase preached, roughly, several hundred times in fifty years, and what it has always meant, in every one of those rooms, is abundance arriving.

That is what it means. Everybody knows what it means. It means the good thing that is coming.

And it is not in the book.

That is the thing he cannot get past, sitting there with his own handwriting in front of him. It is not that the preaching was wicked. Most of it was warm and most of the men saying it were kind.

It is that he checked, and it is not there.

And you know that feeling, because there is something you have believed your whole life on the authority of everybody, and you have never once opened the drawer and looked.

What the book actually says happens when the sky opens

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique and nothing on it is being asked of you.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is under examination. He offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page and nothing to sign anywhere on it. It is written that He said, put me to the test (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that an offer a person can actually accept rather than a line they can only quote.

Here is the sentence everybody knows:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Said to a nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who served there had gone home hungry. What is named in it is that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a lever, and nothing you have or have not done has ever worked it. It is the Holy Spirit who does the carrying here, which is what separates a word being spoken over you from a phrase being repeated at you.

Now the notebook.

The windows of heaven open in the flood, and what comes through them is water, and the whole account is about God dealing with the earth Himself rather than sending an agent (Genesis 7:11).

They are named by a skeptical officer in a besieged city who says that even if the Lord made windows in heaven, this could not happen. It happened the next day, and he saw it and did not eat any of it (2 Kings 7:2). That one is worth sitting with: the phrase enters the mouth of a man who used it to measure what God could not do.

And the doors of heaven open in the wilderness, and God rains down manna, and the psalmist calls it the bread of angels, and says man ate of it and He gave them what they craved (Psalm 78:23).

Then there is the sky itself, tearing.

At the Jordan the heavens are torn open, the Spirit comes down like a dove, and a voice says, this is my beloved Son (Matthew 3:16). Stephen looks up at the end of his life and sees the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing (Acts 7:56). Jacob sees a stairway with the traffic going both ways and wakes saying, surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it (Genesis 28:16). John, at the very end, sees heaven opened and a rider come out of it, and the rider is a Person and He is called Faithful and True (Revelation 19:11).

That is the whole file.

Every single time the sky opens in Scripture, what comes through it is God acting in person, and not once is it an amount. Water He sent Himself. Bread He rained Himself. A Spirit He poured Himself. A Son He named Himself. A Rider whose name is His own faithfulness. It is the Holy Spirit, and not a concordance, who makes that stop being a list in a notebook and start being a fact about the God you are dealing with.

Now the part that is worth the forty minutes.

What God pours out is Himself, and He has never in the whole book sent a delivery instead of coming. It is written that He will pour out His Spirit on all flesh (Joel 2:28), and the day that was finally fulfilled the room got wind and fire and God, and the crowd outside reported people speaking about the mighty works of God. His Spirit is the one who makes that read as the pattern of your own life rather than the pattern of one morning in Jerusalem.

And there is a mercy in what you found, though it may not feel like one yet.

You have not been holding out for something God never offered, and the thing He has actually promised is larger than the thing you were told. It is written that He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all will also with Him graciously give us all things (Romans 8:32). Notice that even that sentence puts the Person first and the all things after, and in that order, and never once the other way round. The Spirit is what makes that read like an inheritance instead of a technicality.

Now the guardrail, and it is why this whole site exists.

Nothing here connects what you have or have not put anywhere to what God does, in either direction. Nothing on this page predicts a change in your circumstances, and nothing on it will tell you that a season is turning, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that. What is written is what is being said: God pours out Himself, His nearness is the gift and not the deposit on one, and He is not rationing it. It is the Holy Spirit, not anybody writing, who takes what is written and makes it land in the room you are actually in.

And for the reader who came here with their jaw set: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint you misread the terms. Nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment has a chair at this table exactly as it is.
