Nothing RequiredMalachi 3:10

I Cannot Ask Anybody Back

This message is for a woman who has stopped accepting hospitality because she cannot return it, has quietly withdrawn from every table she used to be at, and has begun to keep the same distance from God for the same reason

She has a phrase for it now, which she uses on herself, in her head, and it is: I am not in a position.

The first one she turned down was easy to explain. A Sunday lunch, and she said she had things on, and she did have things on, and that was that.

The second one was a woman she has known for twenty years who does a thing every August, and she said she might come later and did not.

By the fourth one she had stopped needing a reason and had started needing a system, and the system is: do not accept anything you cannot return.

That is not pride. She would want that understood. It is arithmetic that she has been running since she was a girl in her mother's house, where the rule was that you never came empty-handed and you never left a debt standing, and where that rule was the whole of a woman's dignity and everybody knew it.

She cannot ask anybody back. Not properly. Not the way it should be done.

So she does not go.

And she has been at this eighteen months, and she is lonely in a way that she would describe as manageable, and last week she caught herself doing something that stopped her dead in the middle of her own hallway.

She was doing it with God.

Approaching Him carefully. Not asking for much. Not staying long. Keeping the account short, because she cannot settle it.

And you know that, because there is a table you have stopped going to rather than be somebody who cannot reciprocate.

I Cannot Ask Anybody Back

Being welcomed does not put you in debt

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique, and there is nothing on it for you to return.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in the famous sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who lets a reader hear that verb land where it actually lands.

And here is the promise this page keeps to the very last line, and this whole site keeps on every page. No appeal. No ask. Nothing smaller instead, nothing to volunteer, nothing to sign, and no account opened. Read the whole thing and close it, and you will owe nobody anything.

Now the verse in its own room.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Said to a nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch, never a door charge, and never once about what you can or cannot put on a table.

Now the rule you were raised on, which was a good rule in the world it came from.

Being welcomed by God does not put you in His debt, and He has never once opened an account in anybody's name. Read what He calls out, and read who He calls: come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). The person who cannot pay is not being let off in that sentence. They are the person the sentence was written for. It is the Holy Spirit, and not this page, who takes a line like that off the page and sets it down in a hallway.

And it is how the whole book signs off. The last invitation in the Bible is let the one who desires take the water of life without price (Revelation 22:17). Last page. No charge, and no expectation of return.

Hear it from His own side, too, because this is where the arithmetic actually breaks. Who has given a gift to Him that he might be repaid (Romans 11:35). And earlier: if I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine (Psalm 50:12). There is no reciprocity available. Not because you are short, but because there is nothing He needs, and that is what makes His table safe.

You are welcome exactly as you are today, and there is no version of you that would be more welcome, including the version who could do the thing in August properly. It is written that by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8). Four bolts on the same door: not your doing, a gift, not works, no boasting. His Spirit is what makes that land as relief rather than as teaching.

Now the thing you caught yourself doing in the hallway.

God has not moved further off because your hands are empty, and He has never once wanted a short visit. It is written that while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly (Romans 5:6). Weak, at the right time, for the ungodly. Nobody in that sentence brought anything and nobody was expected to bring anything afterwards either. The Spirit is the one who makes that a chair you can stay in.

And here is the one for a woman who has been keeping her visits brief.

Jesus said, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). Not bring. Come. The only qualification named is being worn out, and running arithmetic on every invitation for eighteen months is worn out.

Now the guardrail, and it matters more here than anywhere else on this site.

Nothing on this page is going to suggest what you could offer instead. Not your time, not your help, not a small thing to even it up. Nobody here is going to praise your dignity or admire how you manage. Your situation is not a lesson and it is not somebody else's illustration, and you are not being looked at. You are being spoken to. The Holy Spirit is the One who takes a line spoken in one decade and makes it live in an ordinary room today.

And nobody here is going to predict that it changes, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that. What is written is what is being said: God is close, there is no entry price, and He is not rationing His nearness.

The breakthrough

So stand in the hallway and let the arithmetic go.

God is close to you today, with nothing in your hands and nothing to send back, and He did not come near on terms and He is not keeping a note of the visit.

The invitation is His. The proving is His. The coming costs nothing, it has never cost anything, and there is no account open anywhere in it.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It has been true for the whole eighteen months.

You are not in debt to God and there is nothing to return, because nothing was ever a loan. It is written, come, buy and eat without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1), and there is no return leg written into it. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that a table a woman can sit at without working out what she owes.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are standing, with your hands open. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and never sold, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the rule you were raised on, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about yourself, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the months after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Rule that says I cannot take what I cannot return, you are not sitting at this table. It is written that if He were hungry He would not tell me, for the world and its fullness are His, so there is nothing here for me to even up.
  2. Loneliness I have been calling manageable, you are not going to be managed any longer in this hallway. It is written that while we were still weak, Christ died for the ungodly, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a chair I am allowed to stay in.
  3. Jesus, You said come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and the only qualification You named was being worn out. I come in Your name with both hands open and nothing to send back, because there is no entry price, and a signature was never a payment.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
