Nobody Is Asking You To Tap

It is ten past midnight in a student kitchen, and the extractor fan over the cooker is making the noise it makes, and she is waiting for the kettle with her phone in her hand, thumb going up the glass the way a thumb does when nobody is watching.

And there it is again.

Same verse. Fourth time this week. Different account, different music, same white letters laid over a shot of a sunrise, and in the bottom corner a little number ticking down, and under the number a button.

She does not tap it. She never taps it. But she has watched it now four times, and on the fourth watch she notices something she did not notice on the first three, and it is this: she has no idea what that sentence means.

She could tell you what it is for. It is for the button. That is what the sentence does. That is the whole job it has ever had in her life, the way a traffic cone has one job.

The kettle clicks off behind her and she does not move.

Because there is a Bible on the table two feet away, the one her nan gave her when she moved out, still with the receipt in the back, and she has just realized she has never once read that sentence in there. Not once. She has only ever met it in a caption.

And you know that, because there is a verse you could recite in your sleep and could not find with both hands, and the reason is that it has only ever arrived wearing somebody else's coat.

The One being tested is God

Let us settle the thing that governs this whole page before anything else, because if this part is wrong then nothing after it can be right.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. That is not a gentle reading. That is the plain grammar of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not embarrassed by it. Here it is with the caption taken off:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Put me to the test. Older Bibles say prove me now, which is where the archaic ring comes from. Either way, look at where the verb points. It points at Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who has agreed to be found out.

Nowhere in that line is a reader of this page handed a lever. And nothing is being asked of you here either. There is no button under this article, no request three paragraphs down where you have stopped bracing for it, nothing to join, nothing to buy, nothing waiting behind a code. If you came to this page with your guard up, you are allowed to put it down, and you will not need it again before the end.

Now the room it was spoken in, because that room almost never makes it into the caption.

Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a nation's long story. The temple has been rebuilt after the exile and it is running badly. The people who worked there had no fields and no other living; they were meant to eat out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, so they had gone home to farm. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. And into that God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.

It is a sentence about people eating. It was said to a whole nation about one specific building in one specific decade, and the outcome named in it is that the fields would not fail again.

You have been handed one line out of that chapter your whole life and never once the room it was standing in, and that was not the text being thin. It was the quoting that got thin. Scripture is not ashamed of its own setting, and the Spirit has never needed a verse cut down before He can speak through it.

Here is what happens when the sentence goes back where it came from. What God is offering stops looking like a mechanism and starts looking like a character reference.

He is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have decided I am the kind of God who lets His own house go cold and lets the people in it go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am.

That is an enormous thing for God to say. It is a father putting both hands flat on the table in front of a child who has stopped trusting him and saying: ask me anything, watch me for a year, I am not going anywhere.

You are invited to come and find Him faithful, and every bit of the exposure in that arrangement is His. The written word does this everywhere. Taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Come now, and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18). Come and you will see (John 1:39), which is the sentence Jesus used on two men who were following Him at a distance and did not know how to ask. And it is the Holy Spirit, not this paragraph, who lifts an invitation off a page and turns it into an actual midnight in an actual kitchen.

Now something for the reader reading this with their jaw set, because they are half the reason this site exists.

Some of you did the thing that verse was used to ask of you. You did it sincerely, at real cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here is going to explain that away, defend anybody, or suggest that you misread the small print. And nobody is going to tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has already hurt enough people. Your disappointment is welcome on this page and it does not have to be tidied before you go on to the next line.

What can be said is this. The sentence never said what it was used to say. It was never a switch on a wall. It was a Father in a hard century saying, watch Me.

You have a God who has not put a price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is nothing in your hands He is waiting for. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit who makes it land rather than my saying it well: while we were still a long way off, all the running was done by the Father.
