Come And SeeMalachi 3:10

Somebody Else's Pencil

This message is for a woman eleven years out of church, sitting on the floor of her flat with a second-hand Bible she bought for the marbled endpapers, finding that verse underlined in a stranger's pencil with a date written beside it and no explanation of any kind

She bought it for the endpapers.

It was two pounds in the shop on the corner, an old Bible with a cracked spine, and the endpapers were marbled in that deep green and rust that nobody prints any more, and she is a person who buys things for their endpapers.

She has not owned one for eleven years. She did not buy this one as a Bible. She bought it as a beautiful object and she put it on the shelf sideways where the tall books go and did not think about it again for a month.

Then on a Sunday morning, on the floor, sorting the shelf because she could not settle to anything, she opened it.

And somewhere near the back, in that thin dry part where the little books are, there is a sentence underlined. Not neatly. Pencil, pressed too hard, the line going up a bit at the end the way an old hand goes.

And in the margin beside it, in the same pencil, a date. March, and a year that is older than she is.

That is all. No note. No initials. No tract folded into the page and no address stamped inside the cover. Somebody underlined this and wrote down the day, and then closed the book, and eventually died, and eventually the book was two pounds in a shop on a corner.

She reads it three times sitting on the floor.

And it is the strangest thing, because she knows this verse. She could have told you the shape of it. She has heard it read from a platform more times than she can count, and she left eleven years ago partly because of the room it kept being read in.

But she has never once met it like this: quietly, sideways, from a stranger who wanted nothing, on a Sunday, on the floor, with the only person in the room being her.

And you know that, because there is something you walked away from that you have never actually been alone with.

Somebody Else's Pencil

The One being tested is God

Let us settle what governs this page. It is not a technique, and there is nothing in it you have to do.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. That is not a soft reading. It is the plain grammar of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not shy about it. Here is the whole line:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Put me to the test. Older Bibles say prove me now, which is where the old ring comes from. Either way, follow the verb. It lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who volunteered to be found out.

Nowhere in that line is a reader of this page handed a lever, and nothing at all is being asked of you here. No appeal at the bottom of this page, no invitation to come back to anything, no request three paragraphs down where people usually stop bracing. Nobody is trying to get you through a door. You can read this on the floor of your own flat and then close it.

Now the room the sentence was spoken in, because that room hardly ever gets described.

Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a long national story. The temple is rebuilt after the exile and it is running badly. The people who served in it had no fields and no other living; they were meant to eat out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, so they had gone home to farm. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. And into that God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.

It is a sentence about people eating. A whole nation, one building, one decade, and the outcome named in it is that the fields would not fail again.

You have carried one line out of that chapter for years and were never handed the room it stood in, and that is not the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin. Scripture is not embarrassed by its own setting, and the Spirit has never needed a verse cut down before He could speak through it.

Put the sentence back in the chapter and it stops being a mechanism and becomes a character reference.

He is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have decided I am the kind of God who lets His own house go cold and lets His own people go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am.

That is an enormous thing to say about yourself. It is a father putting both hands flat on the table in front of a child who has stopped trusting him and saying, ask me anything, watch me for a year, I am not going anywhere.

Now something quieter, for the woman on the floor.

You did not lose Him when you lost the room, and He has not been waiting at the door of a building for you to come back and explain yourself. It is written that neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:39), and that list does not have an exception in it for the eleven years. It is the Holy Spirit who makes a sentence like that stop being a poster and start being about a specific person on a specific rug.

You are invited to come and find Him faithful, and every bit of the exposure in that arrangement is His. Taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Come now, and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18). Come and you will see (John 1:39), which Jesus said to two men who were following at a distance and did not know how to ask. And it is His Spirit, not this paragraph, who takes an invitation off a page and lands it on a Sunday morning floor.

And for the reader who has come here with their jaw set: some of you did the thing that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint that you misread the terms. Nobody will suggest it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here exactly as it is, and it does not have to be tidied before the next line.

You have a God who put no price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is nothing in your hands He is waiting for. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit rather than my saying it that makes it land: while we were still a long way off, all the running was done by the Father.

The breakthrough

So stay on the floor and let this be the first time that sentence has arrived with nobody attached to it.

God is inviting you to find out whether He is good. That is the whole content of it. He is not at the far end of the invitation with a clipboard. He is not going to produce a figure at the bottom. There is no version of this page where the ask turns up late, because there is no ask, and there never was one in the verse.

The invitation is His. The proving is His. Your part is only the coming, and the coming costs nothing, and it does not start with an explanation of the eleven years, because He built it that way on purpose and He built it that way for you.

You are eleven years out and the invitation on that page has not been withdrawn from you once. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and nobody has to be inside a building to be inside that sentence. The Holy Spirit is the One who reads it to a woman sitting on her own floor with a second-hand Bible.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on the floor you are sitting on. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned by attendance, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to hide. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the verse and the rooms it kept arriving in, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about yourself over eleven years, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Verse I only ever heard from a platform, you have arrived here in a stranger's pencil. God said prove Me now, the One under examination in that sentence is Him, and there is nobody in this room but me and the One who wrote it.
  2. Conclusion that eleven years away has put me outside the reach of God, you are not staying on this rug. It is written that nothing in all creation separates us from His love in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit is the One who makes that list read without an exception in it for me.
  3. Jesus, You said come and you will see, and there has never been one thing behind Your back. I come in Your name with nothing in my hands and no explanation prepared, because the invitation was Yours, the proving is Yours, and somebody underlined it in March and wanted nothing from me at all.
