He walks home the long way, past the olive trees, because he needs the extra ten minutes to work something out.
It was a good evening. Bread came out three times. There were figs, and the small bitter olives from up the hill, and somebody's aunt made the rice with the burnt bottom that everyone fights over, and the lamps were on their string over the table, and a child fell asleep across two chairs and nobody moved her.
And he sat through the whole of it waiting.
Not nervously. He is too practiced for that. He waited the way a man waits for the second shoe: pleasantly, attentively, with one eye on the door. He knew there would be a moment near the end, when the tea came, when his friend would put a hand flat on the table and say, listen, there is one thing.
The tea came. The hand did not.
They said goodnight at the gate. Nobody named a favor all evening.
And now he is out among the trees with the smell of the dust cooling and he is genuinely rattled, because he cannot remember the last time somebody fed him and then simply let him go home.
And you know exactly that walk, because there is a kindness in your life you are still waiting to be billed for.

In this arrangement the Host is the one exposed
Start with the thing that decides everything else on this page, and it is not a technique, and it is nothing for you to perform.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. That is not a soft reading of the sentence. That is what the sentence says, and the Holy Spirit has never once been shy about it. Here it is whole:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Put me to the test. Older Bibles say prove me now, which is where the strange old ring in the phrase comes from. Either way, follow the verb. It lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who has agreed in advance to be found out.
And nothing is being asked of you on this page. No appeal at the bottom, no request tucked three paragraphs down where a guard usually drops, nothing to join and nothing to buy. If you arrived here with one eye on the door, you can bring it back into the room.
Now think about it the way your grandmother would have thought about it, because the culture that verse came out of understood one thing perfectly that ours has almost lost.
At a table, it is the host who is on trial, and never the guest. The guest brings nothing, proves nothing, owes nothing. The guest sits down. Everything that happens after that is a statement about the man who set the table: whether the bread is fresh, whether there is enough, whether he stands over you counting what you take. A guest who arrives with payment has insulted the house. That is not sentiment. That is how the whole world of that chapter worked, and it is the world God is speaking inside when He says come and test Me.
Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a long story. The temple has been rebuilt after the exile and it is running badly. The men and women who served there had no fields and no other living; they ate out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, so they had gone home to work the land. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. Into that, God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.
It is a sentence about people eating. A nation, a building, a decade, and a promise that the fields would not fail again.
You have carried one line out of that chapter your whole life and were never handed the room it was standing in, and that is not the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin. Scripture is never embarrassed by its own setting, and the Spirit has never needed a verse trimmed down before He could speak through it.
Put the sentence back and watch what it stops being. It stops being a mechanism. It becomes a character reference.
He is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have decided I am the sort of God who lets His own house go cold and lets the people in it go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am.
Think how much a host has to trust his own kitchen to say that.
You are invited to come and find Him faithful, and every last bit of the exposure in that arrangement belongs to Him. The written word does this again and again. Taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Come now, and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18). Come and you will see (John 1:39), spoken by Jesus to two men trailing Him at a distance who did not know how to ask for anything. And it is the Holy Spirit, not a paragraph, who lifts an invitation off a page and sets it down on a real road under real trees.
One thing more, for the reader who is reading this with their jaw set.
Some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint that you misread the terms. Nobody will suggest it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment can sit down at this table exactly as it is.
What can be said is this: the sentence never said what it was used to say. It was never a switch on a wall. It was a Father in a hard century saying, watch Me.
You have a God who has put no price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is nothing in your hands that He is waiting on. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit and not my saying it that makes it land: while we were still a long way off, all the running was done by the Father.
So stop under the trees and let this land, because it may be the first time it has arrived without a hand flat on the table.
God is inviting you to find out whether He is good. That is the whole content of the invitation. He is not at the far end of it with a list. He is not going to produce a figure at the bottom. There is no version of this page where the ask arrives late, because there is no ask.
The invitation is His. The proving is His. Your part is the coming, and the coming costs nothing, because the Host arranged it that way on purpose and He arranged it that way for you.
You are walking home from a table where nothing was wanted from you, and you were reading God the same way you read that evening. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and He is the one under examination in His own sentence. The Holy Spirit is what turns that from an argument into something a man can feel walking past the olive trees.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the table you are sitting at. You have the standing to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given rather than earned, which is exactly what this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the habit that has followed you into every room, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about God because of it, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Habit of checking under every table, you are not eating with me tonight. God said prove Me now, the One under examination in that sentence is Him, and I am not going to insult His house by arriving with payment.
- Fear that a bill is coming for the kindness of God, you are leaving by the gate you came in. It is written that He did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, and the Spirit is the One who makes that read like a Father and not like a debt.
- Jesus, You said come and you will see, and there has never been one thing behind Your back. I come in Your name and I bring nothing with me, because the table is Yours, the proving is Yours, and my portion has been kept warm since before I turned for home.
