A Guest In Every Room

She could not tell you when it started, but she can tell you exactly where she stands now.

Just inside the door. Coat still on, or over her arm. Near enough to be in the conversation, far enough to leave without anybody having to make an occasion of it.

She has been doing it for about four years, which is roughly how long it has been since things stopped stretching, and she was not aware of it as a decision at any point.

She has been in these rooms her whole life. She was married out of that church. She knows where the second-best cups are in that hall because she was the one who put them there in 1991.

And she stands just inside the door now, with her coat over her arm, like a woman who has come to collect something.

It is not that anybody has been unkind. Nobody has. That would almost be simpler, because you can do something with unkindness.

It is that she cannot join in with anything that costs, and after a while, if you cannot join in with what a room is doing, you stop feeling like a resident of it and start feeling like a visitor, and a visitor stands near the door.

And here is what she has noticed this year, which she has not said to anybody.

She stands like that with God as well now. Near enough. Coat on.

And you know that, because there is a room you have lived in your whole life that you have started standing at the edge of.

You are not a visitor here

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique, and there is nothing on it for you to bring.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in that famous sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written that He said, put me to the test (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that an offer a person can actually accept rather than a line they can only quote.

And here is the promise this page keeps to the last line, and this whole site keeps on every page. No appeal, no ask, nothing smaller instead, nothing to volunteer, nothing to sign. Read the whole thing to the bottom and nobody will have wanted a thing from you.

Now the verse in its own room.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Said to a whole nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch on a wall, never a door charge, and never once about what is or is not in your purse.

Now the standing near the door.

God has never once put a price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is no seat in His house that costs more than another one. Read what He calls out: come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). The one with nothing is not being allowed in at the back of that sentence. She is named in it, out loud, at the front. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes a line like that and puts it in a hall where you know where the second-best cups are.

And it is how the whole book signs off. The last invitation in the Bible is let the one who desires take the water of life without price (Revelation 22:17). Last page. No charge, and no seating plan.

Now something that is specifically about being a guest, because Scripture has an answer to that exact word.

You are not a visitor in the house of God and you have never been one. It is written that you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19). Look at what that sentence takes off you: stranger, and alien, both of which are words for a person standing near a door with their coat on. And look at what it puts in their place: citizen, and household. His Spirit is the one who makes that a chair with your name on it rather than a nice line about belonging in general.

You are welcome exactly as you are today, and there is no version of you that would be more welcome, including the one from before things stopped stretching. It is written that by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8). Four bolts on the same door: not your doing, a gift, not works, no boasting. The Spirit is what makes that read as relief rather than as a truth you have known for sixty years.

And one more, for a woman with her coat over her arm.

Jesus said, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). Not bring. Come. The only qualification named is being tired, and four years of standing near a door is tired.

Now the guardrail, and it matters more here than anywhere else on this site.

Nothing on this page is going to suggest what you could do instead, or offer, or bring along. Nobody here is going to tell you what a woman your age can still contribute, because that is an ask in a cardigan. Nobody is going to admire how you manage. Your situation is not a lesson and it is not somebody else's illustration, and you are not being looked at. You are being spoken to. It is the Holy Spirit who does the carrying here, which is what separates a word being spoken over you from a phrase being repeated at you.

And nobody here is going to predict that anything changes, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that. What is written is what is being said: God is close, there is no entry price, and He is not rationing His nearness.
