Heaven OpenedMalachi 3:10

Sixteen, And The Room Went Quiet

This message is for a woman of fifty-two who has spent thirty-six years in loud rooms hearing open heavens described as things that were coming, and who has been quietly chasing four minutes that happened when she was sixteen and the room went completely quiet

She was sixteen and it was a Tuesday and it was not a big night.

It was a small room over a shop with about thirty people in it and a man playing a guitar he was not really good enough to play, and her aunt had brought her because her aunt brought her everywhere.

And at some point, without anybody doing anything, the room went quiet.

Not a lull. Not the guitar stopping. Everything stopped, and something came into that room, and for about four minutes nobody moved and nobody spoke and a woman near the back was crying in a way that did not sound like sadness, and a man with his hat still on had both hands over his face.

She was sixteen. She had no words for it and she has never had any since.

That was 1990.

She is fifty-two now, and in the thirty-six years between then and this afternoon she has been in a very great many loud rooms. She has heard an open heaven declared over her more times than she could count. She has heard it described, and named, and enumerated: what is coming, what is about to break, what this year holds.

She has said amen to all of it and she has meant it and she is not cynical.

But she is sitting in her car outside a supermarket right now with the shopping in the boot, and she will tell you the truth if you ask her.

She has been chasing that room since 1990.

Not the outcome. Not the list. The four minutes.

And you know that, because you have four minutes somewhere in your past that no meeting since has matched and nobody has ever once offered you more of.

Sixteen, And The Room Went Quiet

What the outpouring actually is

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique and there is nothing on it being asked of you.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is under examination. He offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page and nothing to sign anywhere on it. It is written that He said, put me to the test (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that an offer a person can actually accept rather than a line they can only quote.

Now the phrase, because it has been decorated for so long by so many people that it hardly has its own furniture left.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

That was said to a nation in one decade about one building, where the store room had gone empty and the families who served there had gone home hungry, and what was named was that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a lever, and nothing you have or have not done has ever operated it. It is the Holy Spirit, not anybody writing, who takes what is written and makes it land in the room you are actually in.

So the honest question is what an open sky is for in Scripture when there is nobody in front of it listing what is coming.

Look at every place it opens. Same answer every single time.

At the Jordan, the heavens are torn open, the Spirit comes down like a dove, and a voice says, this is my beloved Son (Matthew 3:16). Nothing is delivered. Somebody is named, and God is there.

Stephen looks up in the last minutes of his life and says, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:56). Nothing arrives in his hands. He sees a Person on His feet, and it carries him.

Jacob sleeps on a stone in an ordinary field and wakes up saying, surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it (Genesis 28:16). He does not wake up better off. He wakes up with a God who was in the field all night.

What is poured out in an outpouring is God Himself, and there has never once been a substitute in the jar. It is written that He will pour out His Spirit on all flesh (Joel 2:28), and the day that was finally quoted as fulfilled, what happened was wind and fire and God in a room full of people, and the crowd in the street did not report deliveries. They reported hearing people speak about the mighty works of God. It is the Holy Spirit, not this paragraph, who takes that off a page and puts it in a car park outside a supermarket.

Now the part that is for the woman in the car.

The four minutes when you were sixteen were not your best meeting, they were God, and you have not been chasing a mood for thirty-six years. It is written that in His presence there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11), which is a strange thing to say about a presence rather than about an outcome, unless the presence is the thing. The Spirit is what makes that read like an explanation of something that happened to you rather than a line in a psalm.

And the years of loud rooms are not wasted and nobody in them was your enemy.

You are not disloyal for wanting Him more than you want what is coming, and God has never once been offended by somebody who came for Him. Mary sat at His feet while everything urgent was happening in the kitchen, and when she was criticized for it He said she had chosen the good portion and it would not be taken from her (Luke 10:42). Not tolerated. Chosen well. And not taken from her is the phrase to keep: the thing you have been chasing is not being rationed and is not being withdrawn. His Spirit is the one who makes that a permission at fifty-two rather than a story about somebody at a table.

Now the guardrail, and it is why this whole site exists.

Nothing here connects what you have or have not put anywhere to what God does, in either direction. Nothing on this page predicts anything arriving in your life, and nothing on it will tell you a season is about to break, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that. What is written is what is being said: God pours out Himself, His nearness is the gift and not the deposit on one, and He is not rationing it. The Holy Spirit is the One who brings that out of the text and puts it where you are.

And for the reader who came here with her jaw set: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint that you misread the terms. Nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here exactly as it is.

The breakthrough

So sit in the car and say the true thing out loud.

An open heaven is not a list of things that are coming. What is poured out through it is God, and He does not send an announcement in His own place, and He has never been rationing what happened in that room over the shop.

You are allowed to want the four minutes more than the whole list. That is not immaturity and it is not nostalgia. It is the thing every open sky in Scripture is actually about, and it is the portion that does not get taken away.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It was true at sixteen and it is true in the car park.

You already have the thing those loud rooms kept describing as coming, and you have had it since you were sixteen. It is written that God has poured out His Spirit, and that this is what was promised (Acts 2:33). The Holy Spirit is the outpouring itself, and He was not a deposit on something louder that never arrived.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are standing. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned in any room, which is exactly what this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the years of description, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about what you remember, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Thirty-six years of hearing an open heaven described as things arriving, you are not what I have been chasing. What God pours out is Himself, He is not rationing it, and I have never once wanted the list.
  2. Quiet suspicion that I built those four minutes up bigger than they were, you are getting out of this car right now. It is written that in His presence there is fullness of joy, and the Spirit is the One who makes that an account of what happened to me at sixteen rather than a line in a psalm.
  3. Jesus, You said she had chosen the good portion and that it would not be taken from her, and I am choosing it out loud at fifty-two. I stand under an open heaven in Your name with nothing in my hands, because the nearness is the gift, and I was never once wrong about that room.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
