Heaven OpenedMalachi 3:10

The Lay-By On The A Road

This message is for a man sitting in a car in a lay-by after a friend prayed an open heaven over him and described, warmly and at length, a change in his circumstances, when the thing he actually wanted was to be able to talk to God again the way he used to at nineteen

He has pulled into the lay-by because he cannot drive and think at the same time, and he needs to think.

Twenty minutes ago his friend prayed for him. In a kitchen. Hand on his shoulder, kettle going, entirely sincere, and this is a good man who has known him eleven years and who would not lie to him about anything.

And the prayer was about an open heaven, and it was warm, and it went on for a while.

And in it, his friend described things. Doors opening. A turn in his circumstances. A word about the year ahead. It was all said kindly and all of it was meant, and the whole time it was going on, he had his eyes shut and his head down and he was thinking one thing, which he did not say, and has never said to anybody.

That is not it.

He is not ungrateful. He would not want his friend to know he thought it. If any of it came he would be glad.

But it is not it.

Because what he wants, sitting in a lay-by on an A road with lorries going past close enough to rock the car, is the thing he had at nineteen in a room above a garage, when he could talk to God and it was not a performance and it was not difficult and he did not have to work himself up to it.

That is all. He wants to be able to pray again.

And nobody has offered him that. Everything anyone has ever described coming through an open window has been furniture.

And you know that exactly, because somebody once described your breakthrough to you and it was not the thing you were aching for.

The Lay-By On The A Road

What actually comes down through an open heaven

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique and nothing on it is being asked of you.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in the sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. And nothing is being asked of you here: no appeal at the bottom, no request three paragraphs down where a man usually stops bracing. It is written that He said, put me to the test (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that an offer a person can actually accept rather than a line they can only quote.

Now the phrase itself, because it has been furnished by other people for so long that it barely means anything.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

That was said to a nation in a specific decade about a specific building, where the store room had gone empty and the families who served there had gone home hungry, and the thing named in it was that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating, and it is not a lever, and nothing you have or have not done has ever operated it. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that true in a person rather than merely accurate on a page.

So the honest question is what an open heaven is for, in Scripture, when it is not being described by somebody with a slide behind them.

Go and look at where the sky opens in the Bible and you will find the same thing every time. It is not a delivery. It is God arriving.

At the Jordan, the heavens are torn open and the Spirit comes down like a dove and a voice says, this is my beloved Son (Matthew 3:16). Nothing is delivered. Somebody is named, and God is there.

Stephen, dying, looks up and says, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:56). Nothing arrives in his hands. He sees a Person, and it holds him.

Jacob, on a stone in the middle of nowhere, sees a stairway and wakes and says surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it (Genesis 28:16). He does not come away richer. He comes away with a God who was in the field he was already lying in.

What comes down through an open heaven is God Himself, and He has never once sent a substitute in His place. It is written that He will pour out His Spirit on all flesh (Joel 2:28), and when that was finally quoted on the day it happened, what came was wind and fire and God in a room, and the men in the street did not report a delivery. They reported that people were talking about the mighty works of God. And it is the Holy Spirit, not this paragraph, who takes a phrase off a page and makes it something that happens in a lay-by.

Now hear the next part, because it is the thing you did not say in the kitchen.

You are allowed to want God more than you want the year to improve, and that is not ingratitude, it is the truest thing about you. The psalmist said one thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord (Psalm 27:4). One thing. A man with a kingdom's worth of concerns narrowed the whole list down to a face. The Spirit is the one who makes that a permission rather than a poem.

And that ache you have been carrying about the room above the garage at nineteen is not nostalgia and it is not a symptom.

You have not been locked out of the presence of God, and the reason praying is hard right now is not that heaven has closed over you. It is written that we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way that He opened for us (Hebrews 10:19), and the tense in that sentence is the point: it was opened, past, finished, and it is not being re-evaluated on the basis of how prayer felt this month. His Spirit is what makes that read as a door rather than a doctrine.

Now the guardrail, and it is the reason this whole site exists.

Nothing here connects what you have or have not put anywhere to what God does, in either direction. Nothing on this page predicts a change in your circumstances, and nothing on it is going to tell you that a season is about to turn, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that. What is being said is what is written: that God pours out Himself, that His nearness is the gift and not the deposit on one, and that He is not rationing it. The Holy Spirit is the One who keeps that from being information and makes it a word you are standing under.

And for the reader who came here with their jaw set: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint you misread the terms. Nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here exactly as it is.

The breakthrough

So sit in the lay-by a minute longer and say the true thing.

An open heaven is not a delivery slot. What comes down through it is God, and He is not sending furniture ahead of Himself and He is not rationing His own presence.

You do not have to want what somebody else described. You are allowed to want Him. And He is not standing at the far end of that wanting with conditions on it, because the way in was opened by Jesus and it has not been closed since.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It was true while your eyes were shut in the kitchen.

You are under an open heaven right now, and it is open onto His own presence rather than onto a change in your circumstances. It is written that the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (Romans 5:5). The Holy Spirit is the pouring, and He arrived in a lay-by without needing anything to change first.

Come and look. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are standing. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned, which is exactly what this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the list you were handed, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about yourself since praying got hard, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. List somebody else wrote for my open heaven, you are not what I am asking for. What God pours out is Himself, He is not rationing it, and I am not going to spend this year wanting furniture.
  2. Verdict that a man who finds prayer hard has been shut out, you are not riding home in this car. It is written that we have confidence to enter by a new and living way that Jesus opened, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a door standing open rather than a fact I once learned.
  3. Jesus, You tore the sky open at a river and the Father said, this is My Son, and that is what an open heaven has always been for. I stand under it in Your name and I bring nothing with me, because the nearness is the gift and I was never at the window for the bag.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
