Heaven OpenedMalachi 3:10

Dawn At The Water's Edge

This message is for a man standing at the water's edge before sunrise who was told last winter that an open heaven over him meant a house of his own at last, and who comes down here in the dark because what he actually wants is to hear God say something to him directly, once

He is down here before the light, which means he is down here before anybody, and the tide is a long way out, and the sand is that colorless gray it is for the twenty minutes before the sun does anything.

He has done this since he was about nineteen. Not every day. Enough days.

His mother thinks it is because he does not sleep well, which is partly true. His sister thinks it is exercise, which it is not. Nobody has ever asked him properly and if they did he is not sure what he would say.

Last winter a man prayed for him after a gathering, a good man, older, who took his hand in both of his and did not let go while he prayed, which is a thing he has always liked.

And the man said that heaven was open over him and that this was the year for a place of his own. A roof. A door with his own key in it.

Which, honestly, would be a considerable thing. He is thirty-four. He has never had one.

But he did not come down here this morning about that.

He is down here because in fifteen years of standing at this water in the dark, he has never once heard God say anything to him directly, and he has never told a living soul that he wants that, and it is the only thing he wants.

Not a sign. Not a feeling. A sentence. Something he could carry.

And you know exactly that, because there is one thing you want from God that has never appeared on anybody's list of what He is going to do for you.

Dawn At The Water's Edge

An open sky is God arriving, every time

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique and there is nothing on it being asked of you.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page and nothing to sign anywhere on it. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is what turns a famous sentence into an invitation addressed to you.

Now the phrase, because it has been furnished by other people for so long that it barely has a floor of its own.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

That was said to a nation in one decade about one building, where the store room had gone empty and the families who served there had gone home hungry, and what was named was that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a lever, and nothing you have or have not done has ever operated it. It is the Holy Spirit who does the carrying here, which is what separates a word being spoken over you from a phrase being repeated at you.

So the honest question is what an open sky is for, in Scripture, when nobody is standing under it describing a roof.

Look at every place it opens in that book. The answer does not vary.

At the Jordan, the heavens are torn open, the Spirit comes down like a dove, and a voice says, this is my beloved Son (Matthew 3:16). Nothing is delivered. Somebody is named, out loud, and God is there.

Stephen looks up in the last minutes of his life and says, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:56). Nothing arrives in his hands. He sees a Person on His feet, and it carries him through.

Jacob sleeps on a stone in an ordinary field, sees a stairway, and wakes saying, surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it (Genesis 28:16). He does not wake up housed. He wakes up with a God who was already in the field.

What comes down through an open heaven is God Himself, and He has never once sent a change of circumstances instead of coming. It is written that He will pour out His Spirit on all flesh (Joel 2:28), and on the day that happened there was wind and fire and God in a room. It is the Holy Spirit, not this paragraph, who takes that off a page and stands it on wet sand before the sun.

Now the part that is actually for you, and it is the thing you have never told anybody.

You are not shut out from hearing God, and fifteen years of standing at the water without a sentence is not a verdict He has passed on you. It is written that His sheep hear His voice, and He calls His own by name and leads them out (John 10:3). Not the impressive ones. His own. By name. It is His Spirit who makes that read like a promise addressed to a man on a beach rather than a general fact about sheep.

And notice the shape of what you are asking for, because it is exactly what an open heaven has always produced.

The thing that comes through a torn sky in Scripture is nearly always a voice, and the voice nearly always says who somebody is. At the Jordan it was, this is my Son, whom I love. That is not an instruction and it is not an outcome. It is an identity said out loud over somebody standing in water. The Spirit is what makes that an answer to a fifteen-year question rather than a scene from somebody else's life.

Now the guardrail, and it is why this whole site exists.

Nothing here connects what you have or have not put anywhere to what God does, in either direction. Nothing on this page predicts a change in your circumstances, and nothing on it will tell you that this is the year for anything, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that. What is being said is what is written: God pours out Himself, His nearness is the gift and not the deposit on one, and He is not rationing it. It is the Holy Spirit who makes a sentence written centuries ago arrive as something addressed to you.

And for the reader who came here with their jaw set: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint you misread the terms. Nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here exactly as it is.

The breakthrough

So stand at the water and say the true thing out loud.

An open heaven is not a roof and it is not a door with your key in it. What comes down through it is God, and He has never once sent a circumstance ahead of Himself, and He is not rationing His own voice to a man who has waited fifteen years for it.

You are allowed to want the sentence more than the house. That is not a strange prayer. It is the one thing a torn sky has produced, over and over, in every place it happens in Scripture.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It was true at nineteen and it is true this morning.

You are standing under an open heaven whose content is God Himself, and that is what was poured out and what is being poured out still. It is written that the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (Romans 5:5). The pouring is the Spirit, and He is not being rationed to you at the water's edge.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are standing. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned, which is exactly what this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the description you were handed, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about your own silence, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Description of an open heaven with no voice in it, you are not why I am down here in the dark. What God pours out is Himself, He is not rationing it, and I have never once come to this water for a key.
  2. Verdict on my fifteen silent years, you are not standing on this sand and you are not naming me. It is written that His sheep hear His voice and that He calls His own by name, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a promise with my name in it rather than a fact about sheep.
  3. Jesus, You stood in water and the sky tore open and the Father said who You were out loud, and that is what an open heaven has always been for. I stand under it in Your name with nothing in my hands, because the nearness is the gift, and I have waited fifteen years to hear my own name said back.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
