She has fourteen of them on a Saturday morning, aged about fifteen, in a room with a radiator that bangs, and she has been doing this eleven years and she loves it more than anything else she does all week.
So she writes the sentence up on the board. The whole thing, right to the end, because she is one of those teachers who will not do half a verse.
Then she asks the question she asks about everything: right, who is doing what to whom.
And a boy at the back says, easy, miss.
Go on then.
He says, God is testing us.
And she says, hands up who agrees, and every hand in that room goes up. Fourteen out of fourteen. Some of them go up before he has finished the sentence.
And she stands there with the marker in her hand and something goes very still in her, because she was going to say nearly, and instead she says nothing for a second too long, and one of the girls notices and says, miss?
Because the truth is she has read that sentence probably a hundred times in her life, and she has taught it twice, and if somebody had put a hand up and asked her that question at fifteen she would have said the same thing.
And, if she is honest, standing here at forty-three with a marker in her hand, some part of her still would.
And you know that exactly, because there is a verse you could recite and have never once actually parsed.

Follow the verb and see where it lands
Let us settle what governs this whole page, and it is not a technique, and it asks nothing of you.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. That is not a generous reading. That is the grammar, and the Holy Spirit is not shy about it. Here it is, whole, no half verses:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Now do what she does with her fourteen. Who is doing what to whom.
Put me to the test. Not put yourselves. Not let Me see what you are made of. Me. The older Bibles say prove me now, which is the same sentence in an older coat. He is the object of the verb. He is the one under examination. He is the one who has agreed, in advance and in writing, to be found out.
That is not a detail. That single grammatical fact is the difference between a Father and a machine, and every hand in the room went up on the wrong side of it, including, quietly, the teacher's.
Nowhere in that line is a reader of this page handed a lever, and nothing whatsoever is being asked of you here. No appeal at the bottom, no request three paragraphs down where people usually stop bracing, nothing to join and nothing to sign.
Now the room the sentence was spoken in, because that room hardly ever gets taught.
Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a long national story. The temple is rebuilt after the exile and it is running badly. The people who served in it had no fields and no other living; they were meant to eat out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, so they had gone home to farm. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. And into that God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.
It is a sentence about people eating. A nation, one building, one decade, and the outcome named in it is that the fields would not fail again.
You have carried one line out of that chapter your whole life and were never once given the room it stood in, and that is not the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin. Scripture is not embarrassed by its own setting, and the Spirit has never needed a verse cut down before He could speak through it.
Put the sentence back and it stops being a mechanism and becomes a character reference.
He is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have decided I am the kind of God who lets His own house go cold and lets His own people go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am.
You are invited to come and find Him faithful, and every bit of the exposure in that arrangement is His, which means the examination you have been quietly sitting your whole life was never scheduled. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13), and there is the whole doctrine in nine words: His faithfulness is not a response to ours, it is a property of His. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line like that off the page and stops it being a fact you know and starts it being a floor you stand on.
You are not marked on this, you are invited to it, and the difference between those two sentences is the difference between a God you brace for and a Father you go and look at. Taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Come now, and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18). Come and you will see (John 1:39), which Jesus said to two men trailing Him who did not know what to ask.
And for the reader who has come to this page with their jaw set: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint that you misread the terms. Nobody will suggest it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here exactly as it is.
You have a God who put no price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is nothing in your hands that He is waiting for. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit rather than my saying it that makes it land: while we were still a long way off, all the running was done by the Father.
So put the marker down and read it again, and this time read it as it is written.
God is inviting you to find out whether He is good. That is the whole of it. He is not standing at the far end of it with a clipboard. He is not going to produce a figure at the bottom. There is no version of this page where the ask turns up late, because there is no ask, and there never was one in the verse.
The invitation is His. The proving is His. The examination is His. Your part is the coming, and the coming costs nothing, because He wrote it that way on purpose and He wrote it that way for you.
You are not the one on trial in that verse, and you never were, whichever way the hands went up on Saturday. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the verb lands on Him. It is the Holy Spirit, not a room of fifteen-year-olds and not this page, who settles that in a teacher who has read it a hundred times.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are standing. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned by getting it right, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the reading you were taught, then to the thing you have quietly believed about yourself because of it, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Reading that put me under examination in a verse God wrote about Himself, you are corrected and you are dismissed. He said put Me to the test, the verb lands on Him, and I am not sitting an exam that was never scheduled.
- Fear that God is marking me and has been all along, you are out of this room and you are not coming back Saturday. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a floor under my feet instead of a fact in my head.
- Jesus, You said come and you will see, and there has never been one thing behind Your back. I come in Your name with empty hands and no answers prepared, because the invitation was Yours, the proving is Yours, and the sheet in the box has been saying so the whole time.
