The Verse With Nobody Behind It

His daughter has homework, and the homework is to copy out one sentence from anywhere in the Bible and write two lines underneath it about what she thinks it means. She has picked something out of the very back end of the Old Testament because, she says, nobody ever picks that bit.

So she reads it aloud, in that flat sing-song a fourteen-year-old uses when she is reading and thinking at the same time, and the words come across the kitchen table with the pen still in her hand and a plate of toast crusts beside her elbow.

And he goes completely still.

Because he has heard that sentence perhaps forty times in his life, and every single one of those forty times, somebody was about to ask him for something. Not once has it arrived on its own. It has always come out of a microphone, or at the end of a letter, or from a man in a good jacket who put a hand on his shoulder afterwards, and the hand always meant the same thing.

Now here it is, at his own table, in his own daughter's voice, with a pen and a plate of crusts and absolutely nobody in the room who wants a thing from him.

She looks up. What does prove me now mean, Dad?

And he finds, to his own considerable surprise, that he has no idea. Not because he has never heard it. Because he has never once heard it by itself.

And you know that feeling exactly, because there is a verse in your life that has only ever come with a hand behind it, and you would not recognize its actual face if it walked up and sat down.

Who is being tested in that sentence

Let us start with the thing that will govern this whole page, and it is not a technique and it is nothing you have to do.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested in it is God. That is not a soft reading of the written word; it is the plain grammar of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not shy about it. Read it whole:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Put me to the test. Older Bibles have it as prove me now. Either way the object of the verb is Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one exposing Himself to a result. Nowhere in that line is a reader of this page being handed a lever, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read like a Father speaking rather than a mechanism being explained.

And this article is going to keep that promise all the way to the bottom. Nothing is being asked of you here. There is no appeal at the end, no request, no ask hidden three paragraphs down where you stop expecting it. If you came to this page braced, you can stop bracing.

Now the room the sentence was spoken in, because that room matters and it almost never gets described.

Malachi is the last voice at the end of a long, tired chapter of a nation's life. The temple is up again after the exile, and it is running badly. The people who worked there, the ones with no fields and no other living, were meant to be fed out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, and so they had gone home to farm. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. And into that God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.

It is a sentence about people eating. It was spoken to a whole nation about a specific building in a specific decade, and the outcome named in it was that the fields would not fail again.

You have been handed one line out of that chapter your whole life, and you were never given the room it was standing in. Scripture is not embarrassed by its own setting. It is the quoting that got thin, not the text, and the Spirit does not need the verse cut down to size in order to speak through it.

Here is what happens when the sentence gets put back. The thing God is offering stops looking like a mechanism and starts looking like a character reference. He is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have decided I am the sort of God who lets His own house go cold and lets His own people go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am.

That is an enormous thing to say. It is the same nerve as a father putting his hands flat on the table in front of a child who has stopped trusting him and saying: ask me anything, watch me for a year, I am not going anywhere.

You are invited to find Him faithful, and the exposure in that arrangement is entirely His. The written word is full of Him doing this: taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8), come now and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18), come and you will see (John 1:39). And the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an invitation off a page and turns it into an actual afternoon in an actual kitchen.

Now, a word for the reader I can feel reading this with their jaw set, because they are the reason the page exists.

Some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. You did it sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here is going to explain that away, defend anybody, or tell you that you misread the terms. And nobody here is going to suggest that what you gave was too small or your believing was too weak, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome on this page and it does not have to be tidied up before you read the next line.

What we can say is this: the sentence never said what it was used to say. It was never a switch on a wall. It was a Father in a hard century saying, watch Me.

You have a God who has never once put a condition on the door He is inviting you through, and you have nothing in your hands that He is waiting for. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit and not my paragraph that makes it land: while we were still a long way off, the running was done by the Father.
