He is doing the thing he has meant to do since he was about twenty-six, which is read the whole of it, in order, no skipping, and he is fifty-one, and he is on page nine hundred and something on a Tuesday night with everyone else in bed.
The last stretch is hard going. He will admit that. The small books at the end come one after another and half of them are about a nation he has to keep looking up, and the names all rhyme, and he has been reading twenty minutes a night for eleven months and he is nearly there.
And then he turns a page and there it is.
The sentence. The one about the storehouse and the windows of heaven. The one he has heard shouted through a loudspeaker at a county fair. The one he has heard read in a serious voice from a stage seconds before the tone of the room changed.
It is sitting in the middle of a paragraph. It has other sentences on both sides of it. Nobody has put it in a bigger typeface.
And then he does the thing that undoes him, which is nothing at all: he keeps reading, to the end of the chapter, and the end of the next one, and then the page stops, and there is white paper, and then the New Testament begins.
He sits back.
Because he knows enough to know what that white paper is. There is a gap there. Four hundred years of it. No prophet, no word, no voice, nothing, from the last line of that book until an old priest in the temple goes dumb in the presence of an angel.
And this sentence, this one, the loudspeaker sentence, is standing about a page and a half from the edge of that silence.
And you know that feeling, because there is something in your life you have only ever seen in a big typeface and never once in its place on the page.

The One being tested is God
Let us settle what governs this page, and it is not a technique, and there is nothing on it for you to perform.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. That is not a soft reading. It is the grammar of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not shy about it. Here it is whole:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Put me to the test. Older Bibles say prove me now. Either way, watch the verb. It lands on Him. He is the one under examination, He is the one exposing Himself to a result, and He said it about Himself with His own name attached.
Nowhere in that line is a reader of this page handed a lever, and nothing is being asked of you here. No appeal at the bottom of this page, no request three paragraphs down where people usually stop bracing, nothing to join and nothing to sign.
Now the room it was spoken in, because that room hardly ever gets described.
Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a long national story. The temple has been rebuilt after the exile and it is running badly. The people who served in it had no fields and no other living; they were meant to eat out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, so they had gone home to farm. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. And into that God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.
It is a sentence about people eating. A whole nation, one building, one decade, and the outcome named in it is that the fields would not fail again.
You have carried one line out of that chapter your whole life and were never once handed the room it stood in, and that is not the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin. Scripture is never embarrassed by its own setting, and the Spirit has never needed a verse cut down before He could speak through it.
Now hold the setting and the silence together, because that is the thing you noticed at the table and it is worth everything.
God is about to go quiet for four hundred years. He knows it. And He does not sign off with a warning, or a condition, or a final threat. Near the end of the last page He says: come and put Me to the test, and see whether I am who you have decided I am.
That is not a mechanism left running in an empty house. That is a door left on the latch.
God did not go quiet with the door locked, and the last thing He said before the long silence was an invitation with His own name on it. It is written that He is the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning (James 1:17), and four hundred years of no letters did not turn Him one degree. It is the Holy Spirit who takes that fact off a page and puts it in a room where a man is sitting on his own at eleven at night.
And here is what that means for the gap you are in.
Your own quiet stretch is not evidence, and the God who kept His word through four hundred years of it will not be argued out of His character by your eleven months. He is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have decided I am the kind of God who lets His own house go cold and lets His own people go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am. The Holy Spirit is what turns a sentence that is true into a sentence that is true about you.
You are invited to come and find Him faithful, and every bit of the exposure in that arrangement is His. Taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Come now, and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18). Come and you will see (John 1:39), which Jesus said to two men who were following at a distance and did not know what to ask for. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who carries a sentence like that out of its own century and sets it down where you are standing.
And for the reader arriving here with their jaw set: some of you did the thing that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint that you misread the terms. Nobody will suggest it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here exactly as it is.
You have a God who put no price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is nothing in your hands that He is waiting for. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit rather than my saying it that makes it land: while we were still a long way off, all the running was done by the Father.
So sit back in the chair and let this land, because it may be the first time that sentence has arrived in its own place on the page.
God is inviting you to find out whether He is good. That is the whole of it. He is not standing at the far end of the invitation with a clipboard. He is not going to produce a figure at the bottom. There is no version of this page where the ask turns up late, because there is no ask, and there never was one in the verse.
The invitation is His. The proving is His. Your part is the coming, and the coming costs nothing, because He arranged it that way on purpose, and He arranged it that way before He went quiet, and He arranged it that way for you.
You have in front of you the last thing He said before four hundred years of quiet, and what He left on the table was an invitation and not a demand. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and that is where the Old Testament stops speaking. The Holy Spirit is the One who lets a man feel the weight of where a book ends, late on a weeknight.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the table you are sitting at. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the way this verse has always reached you, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about God during your own quiet stretch, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Slogan that has been shouted over this verse for years, you are not the last word on this page. God said prove Me now, the One under examination in that sentence is Him, and He said it a page and a half from four hundred years of silence.
- Conclusion that a quiet God has gone off me, you are not sitting at this table tonight. It is written that with the Father of lights there is no variation or shadow of turning, and the Spirit is the One who makes four hundred silent years read as patience and not as absence.
- Jesus, You said come and you will see, and there has never been one thing behind Your back. I come in Your name with nothing in my hands, because the invitation was Yours, the proving is Yours, and the key was left under the stone where somebody coming home would look.
