She is sitting in her own car with the keys in her hand and she has not put them in the ignition.
Twenty past nine. The hall is still lit up behind her. She can see shapes moving behind the frosted glass at the side door and she knows exactly what is happening in there and she is not going back in.
Here is the thing she cannot get straight in her own head.
The first twenty minutes were wonderful. Genuinely. A man stood up and talked about God the way you would talk about somebody you actually knew, and something in her chest that has been folded up for about nine years started, very cautiously, to open.
And then the tone changed. Not roughly. Nothing crass happened. But the temperature moved, and she felt the room start to be steered, and then the verse arrived, and she knew what the verse was for before he had finished the first half of it, because she has heard that sentence deployed too many times to be surprised by the turn.
So she stood up. Which she never does. And she walked out past a man on the door who smiled at her kindly and said nothing, and she got as far as the car, and now she has been here eleven minutes.
She is not angry. She is embarrassed. Because she wanted what was in the first twenty minutes and she could not stay for the last five, and she cannot work out whether she just walked out on God.
And you know that car park, because you have left a room like that too, and nobody has ever told you it was allowed.

God is the one on trial in that sentence
Let us settle what governs this page, and it is not a technique and it is nothing you have to do.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. That is not a kind reading. It is the plain grammar of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not the least bit shy about it. Here is the whole line:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Put me to the test. Older Bibles say prove me now. Either way the verb lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who volunteered to be found out.
Nowhere in that line is a reader of this page handed a lever. And nothing is being asked of you here. No appeal at the bottom of this page, no request three paragraphs down where people usually stop bracing, nothing to join and nothing to sign. If you got as far as the car, you can stay in the car and read this. You are not being steered.
Now the room the sentence was spoken in, which is not a hall and not a broadcast.
Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a long national story. The temple is rebuilt after the exile and it is running badly. The people who served in it had no fields and no other living; they were meant to eat out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, so they had gone home to farm. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. And into that God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.
It is a sentence about people eating. A whole nation, one building, one decade, and the outcome named in it is that the fields would not fail again.
You have been given one line out of that chapter your whole life and never once the room it stood in, and that is not the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin. Scripture is not embarrassed by its own setting, and the Spirit has never needed a verse cut down before He could speak through it.
Put the sentence back where it came from and it stops being a mechanism and starts being a character reference.
God is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have concluded that I am the kind of God who lets His own house go cold and lets His own people go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am.
That is an enormous thing to put your name to. It is a father putting both hands flat on the table in front of a child who has stopped trusting him and saying, ask me anything, watch me for a year, I am not going anywhere.
You are invited to come and find Him faithful, and the whole of the exposure in that arrangement is His. The written word is full of Him doing this: taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8), come now and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18), come and you will see (John 1:39). And it is the Holy Spirit, not this paragraph, who takes an invitation off a page and puts it in a car park at half past nine.
Now the part that is for you specifically, sitting there embarrassed.
You did not walk out on God tonight, and you are not in trouble. He was not in the steering. He is not standing at the side door with His arms folded waiting to hear your reason. It is written that a bruised reed He will not break and a smoking flax He will not quench (Isaiah 42:3), and the Spirit is the one who makes that read like a description of you rather than a nice line about somebody else.
And for the reader coming to this page with their jaw set, because they are half of why it exists: some of you did the thing that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at real cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here is going to explain that away, defend anybody, or suggest you misread the terms. Nobody is going to tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here and it does not have to be tidied first.
You have a God who put no price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is nothing in your hands He is waiting for. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit who makes it land rather than my saying it: while we were still a long way off, all the running was done by the Father.
So sit in the car and let this be a whole sentence with no turn in it.
God is inviting you to find out whether He is good. That is all of it. He is not at the far end of the invitation with a clipboard. He is not going to produce a figure at the bottom. There is no version of this page where the ask arrives late, because there is no ask, and there never was one in the verse either.
The invitation is His. The proving is His. Your part is the coming, and the coming costs nothing, because He set it up that way on purpose and He set it up that way for you.
You are still inside the invitation you walked out of, and walking out did not put you outside it. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the offer belongs to God rather than to the hall it was read in. The Holy Spirit is the One who brings it out to a car in a dark car park at half past nine.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you, not earned by you, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to hide. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live. Speak first to what followed you out of the building, then to the thing you have quietly decided about yourself since, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Shame that followed me out to this car park, you are not getting in with me. God said prove Me now, the One under examination in that sentence is Him, and I did not walk out on a Father who has been walking toward me the whole time.
- Conclusion that I am too suspicious to be close to God, you are not mine and you are not staying. It is written that He does not break a bruised reed and does not quench a smoking flax, and the Spirit is the One who makes that read like my own name and not somebody else's comfort.
- Jesus, You said come and you will see, and there has never been a second half coming behind Your kindness. I turn the key in Your name and I bring nothing with me, because the invitation was Yours, the proving is Yours, and I am done bracing for thunder.
