The Ask Was Always Me

It is twenty to six and still properly dark, and he is out in the yard shifting crates off the pallet so the line can move fast when the gate opens at eight.

He likes this hour. Nothing is asked of a man at twenty to six except lifting, and lifting he can do.

Then the side door goes and it is the coordinator with two coffees, one of which is for him, and he knows before she is halfway across the yard.

She is kind about it. She always is. She talks about the numbers and the new families and the Thursday that has no cover, and then, right at the end, she says the verse. Gently. Almost sideways. Something about bringing it in and the windows of heaven.

And he says yes, because he always says yes, and she goes back in, and he stands there in the dark with a coffee he did not ask for and a fourth shift he did not want and something turning over in him that he has never once put into words.

Which is this. He has been in rooms where the Bible was opened perhaps a thousand times in his life, and every single time, the thing being asked for was him. His Saturday. His van. His back. His name on the sheet.

Not money. Nobody has ever wanted money off him. They wanted him, and he gave it, and he would give it again.

But he has just realized, standing in the cold with the coffee going lukewarm, that he does not know what that book sounds like when it is not asking.

And you know that too, because you have been the reliable one so long that you would not recognize a page of Scripture that simply wanted you to sit down.

The One being tested is God, and nobody needs you for this

Let us settle the thing that runs this page, and it is not a technique, and there is nothing in it for you to lift.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. That is not a soft reading. That is the plain grammar of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not shy about it. Here is the whole of it:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Put me to the test. Older Bibles say prove me now, which is where the strange old ring comes from. Either way, follow the verb. It lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who agreed to be found out.

Nowhere in that line is a reader of this page handed a lever, and nothing is being asked of you here. There is no Thursday on this page. No sheet, no shift, no appeal three paragraphs down where a man usually stops bracing. You can read this all the way to the bottom and nobody will need anything from you at the end of it.

Now the room the sentence was spoken in, because that room hardly ever gets described.

Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a long national story. The temple has been rebuilt after the exile and it is running badly. The people who served there had no fields and no other living; they were meant to eat out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, so they had gone home to work the ground. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. And into that God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.

It is a sentence about people eating. A whole nation, one building, one decade, and the outcome named in it is that the fields would not fail again.

You have carried one line out of that chapter your whole life and were never handed the room it stood in, and that is not the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin. Scripture is not embarrassed by its own setting, and the Spirit has never needed a verse cut down before He could speak through it.

Put the sentence back in the chapter and it stops being a mechanism and becomes a character reference.

God is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have decided I am the kind of God who lets His own house go cold and lets His own people go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am.

That is an enormous thing to put your own name to. It is a father putting both hands flat on the table in front of a child who has stopped trusting him and saying, ask me anything, watch me for a year, I am not going anywhere.

Now the part that is specifically for the man in the yard, and it needs saying plainly because nobody has ever said it to him.

You are wanted for yourself and not for your hands, and God has never once needed you to cover a Thursday. The mountains were His before you carried a crate, and He formed the sea and the dry land and did not run short of strength doing it (Psalm 95:5). It is written that He is not served by human hands as though He needed anything (Acts 17:25), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as an enormous relief rather than a demotion.

You are invited to come and find Him faithful, and the whole of the exposure in that arrangement is His. Taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Come now, and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18). Come and you will see (John 1:39), which Jesus said to two men trailing Him at a distance who did not know what to ask. And it is the Spirit, and not this paragraph, who takes an invitation off a page and sets it down in a dark yard at twenty to six.

And for the reader arriving here with their jaw set: some of you did the thing that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint that you misread the terms. Nobody will suggest it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome exactly as it is.

You have a God who put no price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is nothing in your hands that He is waiting for. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit and not my saying it that makes it land: while we were still a long way off, all the running was done by the Father.
