Everybody has gone and the hall smells of coffee and floor polish and he is stacking chairs eight to a trolley, which is the number that fits, and he is doing it slowly because there is no hurry and nobody left to see.
He is fifty-eight. He has been the reader in one room or another since he was twenty-three, because he has the voice for it, everyone always said so, and because he says yes.
And the thing he is thinking about, stacking the chairs, is the card.
They used to hand him a card. Typed, laminated after a while because it got used so often, with the verse on it and a small pencil mark after the word storehouse to show where to pause. He would stand up and read it warmly, because he is a warm man, and then he would sit down, and then somebody else would stand up and say the next part.
He never wrote the card. He never chose the moment. He believed every word on it and he still does. But somewhere around his fortieth birthday he noticed that when he stood up with the card, the room changed shape, and he could feel people's shoulders go, and he was the one making them go.
He carried that card in his coat pocket for eleven years and he has never once told a living soul what it did to him.
And you know this, whether you have ever held a microphone or not, because there is something you were asked to do that you did well and cannot now put down.

The One being tested is God, and never the one reading
Let us settle the thing that governs this whole page, and it is not a technique, and there is nothing in it for you to perform.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. That is not a merciful reading. It is the plain grammar of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is not shy about it. Here is the line whole, with no pencil mark in it:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Put me to the test. Older Bibles say prove me now, which is where the old ring comes from. Either way the verb lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who agreed to be found out.
Nowhere in that line is a reader of this page handed a lever, and nothing is being asked of you here. No appeal at the bottom of this page, no request three paragraphs down where a man usually stops bracing, nothing to join and nothing to sign. Nobody is going to hand you a card at the end of this. Read it right through and then go home.
Now the room the sentence was spoken in, because that room hardly ever gets described.
Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a long national story. The temple is rebuilt after the exile and it is running badly. The people who served in it had no fields and no other living; they were meant to eat out of what came in, and it had stopped coming in, so they had gone home to farm. The lamps were low. The house was half staffed. And into that God says: fill the store so there is food in my house, and then watch what I do.
It is a sentence about people eating. A nation, one building, one decade, and the outcome named in it is that the fields would not fail again.
You were handed one line out of that chapter and told where to pause in it, and you were never once given the room it was standing in. That is not the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin, and Scripture is never embarrassed by its own setting. The Spirit has never needed a verse trimmed before He could speak through it.
Put the sentence back in the chapter and it stops being a mechanism and becomes a character reference.
He is not saying: operate this and I am obliged. He is saying: you have decided I am the kind of God who lets His own house go cold and lets His own people go hungry. Come and look. Find out whether that is who I am.
That is an enormous thing to sign your own name to. It is a father putting both hands flat on the table in front of a child who has stopped trusting him and saying, ask me anything, watch me for a year, I am not going anywhere.
Now hear this next part slowly, because it is for you and not for the room.
You are not the one on trial in that verse and you never were, and the weight you have carried in your coat pocket for eleven years was never yours to carry. It is written that the Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (Psalm 145:8), and the Spirit is the one who makes that read like it is addressed to the man stacking the chairs rather than to the people who have gone home.
You are invited to come and find Him faithful, and the whole of the exposure in that arrangement is His. The written word does this everywhere. Taste and see that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). Come now, and let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18). Come and you will see (John 1:39), spoken by Jesus to two men who were following Him and had no idea what to ask for. And it is the Holy Spirit, and not this paragraph, who lifts an invitation off a page and sets it down in an empty hall at half past ten.
And for the reader who has come to this page with their jaw set, because they are half of why it exists: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at real cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or suggest you misread the terms. And nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here exactly as it is.
You have a God who put no price on the door He is inviting you through, and there is nothing in your hands that He is waiting for. That is what is written, and it is His Spirit and not my saying it well that makes it land: while we were still a long way off, all the running was done by the Father.
So sit down on one of the chairs you have not stacked yet and let this arrive without a card in it.
God is inviting you to find out whether He is good. That is the entire content of the invitation. He is not standing at the far end of it with a clipboard. He is not going to produce a figure at the bottom. There is no version of this page where the ask turns up late, because there is no ask, and there never was one in the verse.
The invitation is His. The proving is His. Your part is the coming, and the coming costs nothing, because He arranged it that way on purpose and He arranged it that way for you, including for the man who has spent thirty-five years reading other people's words out loud.
You are not holding a card with a pencil mark on it tonight, and the verse underneath it was never the card. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the sentence belonged to God long before anybody typed it out. The Holy Spirit is the One who hands it back to a man stacking chairs in an empty hall.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the hall you are standing in. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and never earned, which is the exact thing this verse has been used to hide. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the thing in your coat pocket, then to what you have quietly concluded about yourself since, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Card with the pencil mark on it, you are not in my coat pocket any more. God said prove Me now, the One under examination in that sentence is Him, and I am not the one on trial and I never was.
- Verdict that a man who reads for everybody does not get read to, you are not staying in this hall. It is written that the Lord is gracious and merciful and abounding in steadfast love, and the Spirit is the One who makes that sentence turn around and face me.
- Jesus, You said come and you will see, and there has never been one thing behind Your back. I come in Your name with nothing in my hands and nothing in my pocket, because the invitation was Yours, the proving is Yours, and somebody has pulled the chair out before I could say I did not need one.
