It is four acres and it never grew anything worth writing home about, and she could tell you the name of every gap in the wall around it.
Her people had it from before anybody living can account for. Nobody ever farmed it properly. It was where the children went, and where the ponies went, and where they had the marquee the year her sister got married, and where, in 1978, a light aircraft came down and everybody was all right, which is still the most exciting thing that has happened in that parish.
She signed it over in April.
Not under pressure. Nobody rang her. Nobody came out to the house. The verse was read on a Sunday morning and she thought about it through Monday and Tuesday and rang her solicitor on the Wednesday, and the woman on the phone said, are you quite sure, and she said yes, and she was.
She has never once said she regrets that.
Ten years since, and they have been lean ones. She is not going to dress that up. Two years the price went the wrong way and stayed there. Her husband's knees. Her son taking a job three hundred miles away that he did not want, for reasons everybody understood and nobody discussed.
Nothing you could point at as a disaster. Just a decade that has come in tight.
And she stands at the top gate, most weeks, looking down at four acres she does not own, and she has been reading the ten years the way you read a letter from somebody who does not write often.
Line by line. Slowly. Looking for what is really meant.
And you know that gate, because there is a decade in your life you have been reading as correspondence.

The years are not a letter
Let us settle what governs this page. It is not a technique, and nothing on it is being asked of you.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested in it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page, no request three paragraphs down, nothing to join and nothing to sign, and there never will be on this site. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is what turns a famous sentence into an invitation addressed to you.
Now the sentence, in its own room.
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Said to a whole nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who served there had gone home hungry. What it names is that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch on a wall, and nothing you ever signed has operated it, in either direction.
Now the thing that gets said first here, because it never gets said first anywhere else.
You were not simple, and believing God is not the part of a long life to be embarrassed about. What happened between that Sunday and that Wednesday was faith, and faith is not the same as being taken in. It is written that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1), and the long list after it is full of people who acted on what God said and did not all see the end of it, and Scripture calls them commended. It is the Holy Spirit, and not this page, who makes that read like it is addressed to a woman at a top gate.
Now the ten years.
Scripture is plainer about reading your circumstances than most preaching is, and it never softens it.
A man born blind is brought to Jesus and the disciples ask whose fault it is, his or his parents. Jesus says neither (John 9:3). Not a lesser fault, not one to be gone into later. Neither.
A tower falls in Siloam and kills eighteen people, and Jesus raises it Himself and asks whether the crowd thinks those eighteen were worse offenders than everybody else in Jerusalem, and answers it flat: no (Luke 13:4).
And Asaph writes down, in a song that is still in the middle of the Bible, that he looked at how easy life was for people who cared nothing for God and near enough lost his footing over it (Psalm 73:2). Nobody took it out. It is in there because standing at a gate reading a decade is an old thing to do, and God is not shocked by it.
A lean decade is not a letter from God, and He has never once written to anybody through their prices or their knees. It is written that He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45). That is not a promise about fairness. It is a plain statement that ground and weather are not correspondence. The Spirit is the one who gets that in underneath ten years of reading.
And here is what has not happened, which is the whole subject of this page.
God has not withdrawn from you, and these ten years are not the sound of Him stepping back. It is written that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38). Things present. Ten years, named in the list, on the losing side of the sentence already. And His Spirit is what makes that the ground under a woman's boots rather than a verse she has known since she was small.
Now the guardrail, and it is why this whole place exists.
Nobody here is going to tell you this is the year it comes right. Nobody here is going to hint that because you signed it over, something is quietly on its way to you instead. That is the same machine in a Sunday coat, and you have had enough of machines.
God's faithfulness to you was never payment for four acres, and that is the best news at this gate, because a thing that was never payment can never come up short. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). His faithfulness is not a response to yours. It is what He is made of. The Spirit is the one who makes that the reason a woman can look down a slope without reading it.
So stand at the gate and let four acres be four acres.
You signed something over. It was yours, it had been in your family longer than anybody can account for, and you signed it believing God. Nobody on this page is going to value it, revalue it, explain what it was really for, or tell you what it bought. It did not buy anything, and that is not because it was only four poor acres. It is because God was never selling.
And ten lean years are not His answer about that April. They are ten years. He has been in every one of them, in the prices and the knees and the job three hundred miles away, and He has not withdrawn one inch.
Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It has been true the whole ten.
You are not looking at God's answer about you when you look at that lean decade, and He has not withdrawn from your family once inside it. It is written that He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). The Holy Spirit is the One who says that on ground that has been hard for ten years without pretending the ten years were easy.
Come and look. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the gate you are standing at. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not bought, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to cover over. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the years you have been reading, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about the woman who rang her solicitor, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the years after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Ten lean years, you are not God's answer about the April I signed. He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust, and ground has never once been correspondence.
- Verdict that a woman who thought it over for three days and then did it was simple, you are not standing at this gate. It is written that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a commendation and not a caution to the young.
- Jesus, You said neither this man nor his parents sinned when they asked whose fault a life was, and You have never once answered anybody that way. I set this down in Your name and I keep no account of it, because Your faithfulness was never payment, and it was never about the chair.
