The book is A5, hardback, blue cloth, and it cost almost nothing, and he bought it specifically for this on the way home.
That is the part that has just landed on him, eleven years later. He bought the book on the way home. Before he had even got in the door. He handed the thing over in the afternoon and he stopped at a shop and bought a notebook for the recording of it.
The first entry is one line. The date, and what he gave, and underneath it, in slightly smaller writing, the reference: Malachi 3:10.
He has written in it once a year since. Every year, near enough on the anniversary, one paragraph, and the paragraphs are not angry and they are not devotional. They are factual. This is the year that happened. This is what did not.
Eleven entries.
He is a careful man. He was a careful man before any of this and it is the reason people trust him with things. He would tell you, if you asked, that keeping a record is simply good practice and that he keeps a record of many things.
And this evening, sitting with the book shut under his hand and the lamp on, he has finally said the sentence to himself.
This is not a journal. This is a set of accounts. And the party I have been keeping them on is God.
Eleven years of an audit nobody asked him to conduct, on a Being who never signed a contract, over a transaction that never took place.
And you know that, because there is something you have been quietly totaling up in your head since the day it happened.

Nobody was ever keeping accounts
Let us settle what governs this page. It is not a technique, and nothing on it is being asked of you.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested in it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page, no request three paragraphs down, nothing to join and nothing to sign, and there never will be on this site. It is written that He said, put me to the test (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that an offer a person can actually accept rather than a line they can only quote.
Now the sentence, in its own room.
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Said to a whole nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who served there had gone home hungry. What it names is that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch and it was never a contract, and nothing you have handed over has ever operated it.
Now the thing that gets said first here, because a careful man deserves it said carefully.
You were not credulous, and acting on what God said is not a lapse in your judgment. What happened that afternoon was faith, and faith is not the opposite of care. It is written that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1), and the roll call that follows is full of people who acted on God's word and did not all see the outcome, and the book calls them commended, not careless. It is the Holy Spirit, and not this page, who makes that read like it is addressed to a man with a blue cloth notebook under his hand.
Now the ledger.
Scripture is direct about reading your circumstances as a message, and it does not hedge.
A man born blind is brought to Jesus and the disciples ask whose fault it is, his or his parents. Jesus says neither (John 9:3). Not a smaller fault. Neither.
A tower falls in Siloam and kills eighteen people, and Jesus raises it Himself and asks whether the crowd thinks those eighteen were worse offenders than everybody else in the city, and answers it: no (Luke 13:4).
And Asaph writes down, in a song still in the Bible, that he did the arithmetic on people who cared nothing for God and found their lives adding up better than his, and nearly lost his footing over it (Psalm 73:2). He wrote it down, too. It is in there because keeping a ledger on God is old, and God is not shocked by it.
Your eleven entries are not an audit of God, because there was never an account open in the first place. Read what He says about being owed: if I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine (Psalm 50:12). And read Paul: who has given a gift to Him that he might be repaid (Romans 11:35). Those are not rebukes of a careful man. They are the reason his book has always been a book with one party in it. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line like that off a page and gets it under a lamp on a desk.
And here is what did not happen, which is the actual subject of this page.
God has not withdrawn from you, and eleven years of factual paragraphs are not the sound of Him stepping back. It is written that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38). Things present. Eleven years, in the list, already on the losing side of the sentence. His Spirit is what makes it a floor rather than a well-annotated fact.
Now the guardrail, and it is why this whole site exists.
Nobody here is going to tell you this is the year it settles. Nobody here is going to hint that because you gave, something is on its way to you instead. That would be opening the account again with better manners, and you have kept books long enough to see through that.
God's faithfulness to you was never payment for anything you handed over, and that is the best news in that notebook, because a thing that was never payment can never be in arrears. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). His faithfulness is not an entry that responds to yours. It is what He is made of. The Spirit is the one who makes that the reason a careful man can close a book.
So close the book.
You gave something. It was yours, it was real, and you handed it over believing God. Nobody on this page is going to audit it, revalue it, explain what it was really for, or tell you what it bought. It did not buy anything, and that is not because the sum was wrong. It is because God was never selling and there was never a ledger on His side of the desk.
And eleven years of entries are not His answer about you. They are eleven years. He has been in all of them, He has not withdrawn one inch, and He has never once opened a page with your name at the top of it.
Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It has been true since the afternoon you bought the notebook.
You are not being kept accounts on, and the book you have been keeping has no counterpart anywhere in heaven. It is written that love keeps no record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5), and the God who is love does not run the other ledger either. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that a page a man can close at his own table.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the desk you are sitting at. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not bought, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the book, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about yourself since the day you bought it, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the years after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Ledger I have kept on God for eleven years, you are closed. It is written that if He were hungry He would not tell me, for the world and its fullness are His, so there was never an account open for you to keep.
- Suspicion that a careful man let himself be careless one afternoon, you are not sitting at this desk. It is written that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a commendation rather than a lapse in judgment.
- Jesus, You said neither this man nor his parents sinned when they asked whose fault a life was, and You have never once answered anybody that way. I set this down in Your name and I keep no account of it, because Your faithfulness was never payment, and they did not lend it to me.
