Never WithdrawnMalachi 3:10

The Year I Gave Away

This message is for a woman of twenty-four who deferred her place, gave a year of her life to something after that verse was read over the room, watched the whole thing quietly fold, and has spent the two years since reading her own flat and ordinary life as God's opinion of what she did

She still has the email.

Not the important one. The boring one, from the admissions office, confirming that her place had been deferred by twelve months and that she should be in touch by the following March.

She was twenty-one. It was one of the best decisions she has ever made and she would like that on the record before anybody starts.

The verse got read out at the end of a weekend away, and the thing being asked for that night was a year. Not from her specifically. From the room. And she sat in a plastic chair with her knees up and she knew, in the settled way you occasionally know things, that she was going to say yes.

So she gave the year.

She was extremely good at it, as it happens. She got up early. She was the one who remembered the little things. Two of the people she worked with that year still text her.

And about eight months in, the whole thing quietly folded. Not scandalously. Funding, and a person leaving, and then two more, and then a WhatsApp group that stopped being used, and that was that.

She went back. She finished. She is twenty-four now and she has a job that is fine and a flat that is fine and a life that is fine, and here is the actual problem, which she has never said to a single person.

She has spent two years reading her own ordinary life as a review.

Every flat Tuesday. Every job that is fine. All of it arriving, quietly, as God's considered opinion of a girl in a plastic chair with her knees up.

And you know that, because there is a season of your life you have been reading as a review of a decision.

The Year I Gave Away

Your life is not a review of your decision

Let us settle what governs this page. It is not a technique, and nothing on it is being asked of you.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested in it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is under examination. He offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page, no request three paragraphs down, nothing to join and nothing to sign, and there never will be on this site. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.

Now the sentence, in its own room.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Said to a nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who served there had gone home hungry. What is named in it is that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch, and nothing you have ever handed over has operated it, in either direction. The Holy Spirit is the One who takes a line spoken in one decade and makes it live in an ordinary room today.

Now the thing that has to be said first, and said plainly.

You were not naive, and believing God is never the part of the story to be embarrassed about. What happened in that plastic chair was faith, and faith is not the same as being taken in. It is written that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1), and the long list that follows is full of people who acted on what God said and did not all see how it turned out, and the book calls them commended, not gullible. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who makes that read like it is addressed to a twenty-one-year-old with her knees up.

Now the two years.

Scripture is unusually direct about reading your circumstances as a message, and it does not hedge.

A man born blind is put in front of Jesus and the disciples ask whose fault it is, his or his parents. Jesus says neither (John 9:3). Not a smaller fault. Not one to be discussed privately afterwards. Neither.

A tower falls in Siloam and kills eighteen people, and Jesus brings it up Himself and asks whether the crowd thinks those eighteen were worse offenders than everybody else in the city, and answers it: no (Luke 13:4).

And a man called Asaph wrote down, in a song that is still in the Bible, that he looked at how comfortable life was for people who had no interest in God and nearly lost his footing over it (Psalm 73:2). Nobody edited that out. It is in there because what you have been doing for two years is ancient and God is not startled by it.

Your ordinary life is not a review, and God has never once graded anybody by their Tuesdays. It is written that He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45). That is not a promise of fairness. It is a plain statement that weather is not a message. The Spirit is the one who gets that underneath two years of decoding.

And here is what did not happen, which is the actual subject of this page.

God has not withdrawn from you, and a flat stretch is not the sound of Him stepping back. It is written that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38). Things present. The two years are in that list, on the wrong side of the sentence, already dealt with. His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a verse you could already quote.

Now the guardrail, and it is why this site exists.

Nobody here is going to tell you that this is the season it all pays off. Nobody here is going to hint that because you gave a year, something is on its way to you instead. That is the same machine with a nicer voice, and you have had enough of machines.

God's faithfulness to you was never payment for the year you gave, and that is the best news on this page, because a thing that was never payment cannot go unpaid. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). His faithfulness is not a response to yours. It is what He is made of. The Spirit is the one who makes that the reason a twenty-four-year-old can stop reading her own diary for clues.

The breakthrough

So put the phone down and stop reading the last two years for clues.

You gave a year. It was yours, it was real, and you gave it believing God. Nobody on this page is going to audit it, revalue it, explain what it was really for, or tell you what it bought. It did not buy anything, and that is not because it was too small. It is because God was never selling.

And your ordinary life is not His opinion of you. It is an ordinary life, and He is in all of it, and He has not withdrawn a single inch since the night in the plastic chair.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It has been true through every flat Tuesday of it.

You are not looking at God's opinion of that year, and He was in it whether or not the thing you deferred for ever came together. It is written that we know that for those who love God all things work together for good (Romans 8:28), and work together is a slow verb and not a receipt. The Holy Spirit is the One who says it without turning a year into a transaction.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the flat you are standing in. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not bought, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the years you have been decoding, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about the girl in the plastic chair, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the years after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Two flat and ordinary years, you are not God's opinion of me. He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, weather has never been a message, and you can stop being read for clues.
  2. Verdict that a girl who believed God was simply young and easily led, you are not living in this flat. It is written that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a commendation rather than an embarrassment.
  3. Jesus, You said neither this man nor his parents sinned when they asked You whose fault a life was, and You have never answered anybody that way since. I set this year down in Your name and I keep no account of it, because Your faithfulness was never payment, and the summer was still the best one even though the raft sank.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
