The Thing I Have Never Told Him

They have been married eighteen years and he knows everything.

He knows what happened with her father. He knows about the six months she was not well in her late twenties. He knows the thing she said to her sister in 2011 that she is still not entirely proud of.

He does not know about the money she gave when she was twenty-three.

That is the only one. In eighteen years, one thing, and it is not even a very interesting one, and she has been carrying it the way you carry a stone in a coat pocket, aware of it in every coat.

She was twenty-three. She had been saving since she was seventeen, in the determined and slightly grim way that people who grew up without much do save. It was not for anything in particular. It was for the fact of having it.

And the verse was read, and something in her lit up, and she gave all of it in one go, and she told nobody, and she has told nobody since.

Nothing happened. She does not mean anything dramatic by that. She means that the next year was a year, and the one after that, and she rebuilt some of it eventually and never quite got back to where she had been, and at forty-one that is simply a fact about her life.

And here is the part she has never said out loud, and the reason it has become a stone.

She does not think she is ashamed of giving it.

She thinks she is ashamed of believing. Of being the sort of person who lit up. And the fact that she has never once been able to say it at her own kitchen table, to a man who knows everything else about her, has become, over eighteen years, the proof.

And you know that, because there is a thing you did in good faith that you have never told anybody, and the secrecy itself has started to feel like the evidence.

The shame is not evidence

Let us settle what governs this page. It is not a technique, and nothing on it is being asked of you.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested in it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is under examination. He offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page, no request three paragraphs down, nothing to join and nothing to sign, and there never will be on this site. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.

Now the sentence, in its own room.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Said to a nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who served there had gone home hungry. What it names is that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch, and nothing you have ever handed over has operated it, in either direction. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who carries a sentence like that out of its own century and sets it down where you are standing.

Now the thing that gets said first here, because it is the actual subject.

You were not naive, and lighting up at something God said is not a fault in your character. What happened at twenty-three was faith, and faith is not the same as being taken in. It is written that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1), and the roll call that follows is full of people who acted on what God said and did not all see the outcome, and Scripture calls them commended. Nobody in that chapter is described as having been young and easily moved. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who makes that read as an address to a woman of forty-one with a stone in her pocket.

Now the eighteen years of not saying it.

Scripture is direct about reading your circumstances as a message, and it does not soften it.

A man born blind is brought to Jesus and the disciples ask whose fault it is, his or his parents. Jesus says neither (John 9:3). Not a lesser fault. Neither.

A tower falls in Siloam and kills eighteen people, and Jesus raises it Himself and asks whether the crowd thinks those eighteen were worse offenders than everybody else in the city, and answers it: no (Luke 13:4).

And Asaph writes down, in a song still in the Bible, that he looked at how comfortable life was for people who cared nothing for God and nearly lost his footing over it (Psalm 73:2). Nobody edited that out.

Your shame is not evidence, and God does not accept feelings as testimony against a person. It is written that if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and He knows everything (1 John 3:20). Read that carefully, because it is not saying your heart is right and God agrees. It is saying your heart is the smaller authority and it is being overruled. His Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and gets it into a coat pocket.

And here is what did not happen, which is what this page is about.

God has not withdrawn from you, and eighteen years of a secret are not the sound of Him stepping back. It is written that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38). Things present. Eighteen years, in the list, on the losing side of the sentence. His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a verse.

Now the guardrail, and it is why this whole site exists.

Nobody here is going to tell you that this is the season it turns. Nobody here is going to hint that because you gave, something is on its way instead. That is the same machine with a gentler voice, and you have had enough of machines. And nobody here is going to tell you to go and tell your husband. That is yours, and it is not a condition of anything.

God's faithfulness to you was never payment for what a twenty-three-year-old handed over, and that is the best news on this page, because a thing that was never payment cannot be regretted as a bad bargain. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). His faithfulness is not a response to yours. It is what He is made of. The Spirit is the one who makes that the reason a woman can put her hand in her pocket and find nothing in it.
