The Woman Who Warns Everybody Now

She noticed it in a photograph, which is how these things get noticed.

Somebody's birthday. Twenty-odd people, a garden, one of those pictures where half the group is looking at the wrong camera. And she is at the edge of it, mid-sentence, talking to a girl of about twenty-two.

And her face.

She knows that face. She has seen it on other women her whole life and she promised herself at nineteen that she would never have it, and there it is, on her, in a garden, in the middle of a birthday.

She knows exactly what she was saying in that photograph, too. She can date it by the girl. She was saying be careful.

That is what she says now. It is what she is for, in a room. Somebody young gets excited about something and she comes alongside afterwards, kindly, warmly, and she tells them a version of what happened to her, with the details filed off, and she watches them go quiet, and she goes home feeling as though she has done a service.

Seven years ago she gave what she had, after that verse was read out, and she gave it with her whole heart, and nothing opened.

And she is not going to pretend that did not happen and she is not going to have it explained to her.

But she is looking at this photograph on her phone in a car park and thinking a thought she has never allowed before, which is: I have turned into the warning. That is my whole job now.

And you know that, because there is something that happened to you that has quietly become the thing you are for.

He never made you a cautionary tale

Let us settle what governs this page. It is not a technique, and nothing on it is being asked of you.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested in it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is under examination. He offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page, no request three paragraphs down, nothing to join and nothing to sign, and there never will be on this site. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.

Now the sentence, in its own room.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Said to a nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who served there had gone home hungry. What it names is that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch, and nothing you have ever handed over has operated it, in either direction. It is the Holy Spirit who does the carrying here, which is what separates a word being spoken over you from a phrase being repeated at you.

Now the first thing, and it is not a correction of you.

You were not a fool, and your disappointment is not an error to be talked out of. What happened in you seven years ago was faith, and faith is not the same as being taken in. It is written that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1), and the roll call that follows is full of people who acted on what God said and did not all see the outcome, and Scripture calls them commended. Nothing on this page is going to tell you it did not hurt. It is the Holy Spirit, and not this page, who makes that read as an address to a woman in a car park with a photograph on her phone.

Now the warning.

Scripture is direct about reading your circumstances as a message, and it does not hedge.

A man born blind is brought to Jesus and the disciples ask whose fault it is, his or his parents. Jesus says neither (John 9:3). Not a smaller fault. Neither.

A tower falls in Siloam and kills eighteen people, and Jesus raises it Himself and asks whether the crowd thinks those eighteen were worse offenders than everybody else in the city, and answers His own question: no (Luke 13:4).

And Asaph writes down, in a song that is still in the Bible, that he looked at how comfortable life was for people who cared nothing for God and nearly lost his footing over it (Psalm 73:2). It is in there because your seven years are ancient and God is not shocked by them.

Your experience is not a verdict, and God has never once appointed a hurt person as the standing warning in a room. It is written that the God of all comfort comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction (2 Corinthians 1:4). That is what He does with a hard story, and look at the word: comfort. Not caution. Not deflate. Not go round afterwards and take the shine off a girl of twenty-two. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line like that off a page and makes it a different job description in a garden.

And here is what did not happen, which is the actual subject of this page.

God has not withdrawn from you, and seven years of nothing opening is not the sound of Him stepping back. It is written that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38). Things present. Seven years, in the list, already on the losing side of that sentence. His Spirit is what makes it a floor rather than a doctrine.

Now the guardrail, and it is why this site exists.

Nobody here is going to tell you this is the season it turns. Nobody here is going to hint that because you gave, something is on its way to you instead. That is the same machine with a warmer face, and you have had enough of machines. And nobody here is going to tell you to stop protecting people. Your caution came from somewhere real.

God's faithfulness to you was never payment for what you handed over, and that is the best news on this page, because a thing that was never payment cannot have been wasted. It is written that if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). His faithfulness is not a response to yours. It is what He is made of. The Spirit is the one who makes that the reason a woman can stand in a garden with something other than a warning in her mouth.
