She left it on a Tuesday and she did it fast, the way you take a plaster off.
Nine people. Girls she has known since school. It was not a falling out and nobody had done anything, and if any one of them rang her tomorrow she would answer on the second ring and mean it.
She left because of the notifications.
Because every single one of them was a plan. Somebody's thing on Friday. The place that does the pancakes. The weekend in April, which was going to be so cheap if everybody committed now. The gift for the one who is getting married, which somebody had worked out very kindly so that it came to hardly anything each.
Hardly anything each.
She would read them and do the arithmetic without meaning to, and every time the answer came out the same, and then she would sit there composing the message that meant no without meaning poor, and some nights that message took her twenty minutes and she did not send it.
So she left. And the silence has been a relief, and it has also been much worse, and both of those are true at once and she does not really want to look at that.
And the thing she has noticed lately, which is the actual reason she is reading this, is that she has started doing exactly the same thing with God.
Not doubting. Nothing dramatic. She has just stopped opening it, the way she stopped opening the chat, because she assumes there will be something in there she cannot meet.
And you know that exactly, because you have begun to check every invitation for the part that costs before you let yourself want it.

Nothing is being asked here, and that is not a technique
Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a method, and there is nothing on it for you to meet.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in the famous sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.
And here is the promise this page keeps to the last line. No appeal. No ask. Nothing small instead, nothing to volunteer in place of it, nothing to sign, nothing at the bottom. If you started reading with your guard up doing the arithmetic, the answer is nought, and it stays nought, and you do not have to keep checking.
Now the verse in its own room.
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Said to a whole nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch, never a door charge, and never once about what is or is not in your hands.
Now the door, which is what you have actually been standing outside of.
God has never put a price on the door He is inviting you through, and He is not on the other side of it working out whether you can afford to be there. Read what He actually shouts, because He shouts it like a man at a market: come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). That is not a discount and it is not a hardship rate. It is a stall with the word without said twice in one breath. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line like that off a page and gets it onto a phone screen on a Tuesday.
And it is not a one-off, either. It is how the entire book signs off. The last invitation in the Bible is let the one who desires take the water of life without price (Revelation 22:17). Last page, last offer, no charge.
You are welcome exactly as you are this month, and there is no version of you that would be more welcome, including the one who could do the weekend in April. It is written that by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8). Count how hard that sentence works to shut the door back to payment: not your doing, gift, not works, no boasting. Four locks, all on the same door. His Spirit is what makes that read like relief instead of theology.
Now the thing that has quietly happened to you since Tuesday.
God has not moved further off because your hands are empty, and He never once needed them full. It is written that while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly (Romans 5:6). Weak, at the right time, for the ungodly. Between them those three phrases rule out every entry condition anybody could invent, including the ones you have invented for yourself. The Spirit is the one who makes that a door you can open tonight rather than a fact you already knew.
And look at the shape of how He calls people.
Jesus said, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). Not bring. Come. The only qualification in that sentence is being worn out, and composing a message for twenty minutes and not sending it is being worn out.
Now the guardrail, and it matters more here than anywhere else on this site.
Nothing on this page is going to suggest what you could do instead. There is no smaller thing, no time you could offer, nothing to volunteer, and nobody here is going to tell you how well you are coping. Your situation is not a lesson and it is not somebody else's illustration. You are not being looked at. You are being talked to. It is the Holy Spirit who does the carrying here, which is what separates a word being spoken over you from a phrase being repeated at you.
And nobody here is going to predict that any of it changes, because nobody writing to you has the right to say that. What is written is what is being said: God is close, there is no entry price, and He is not rationing His nearness.
So stop checking this one. There is nothing in it.
God is close to you tonight, with nothing spare, exactly as you are, and He did not turn up on condition and He is not leaving because the answer to the arithmetic is nought.
The invitation is His. The proving is His. The coming costs nothing, it has never cost anything, and there is no version of this page where a charge arrives at the end.
Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It was true on Tuesday when you left the chat.
You are not being priced out of anything here, and God has not moved further off because your account is empty. It is written, come, everyone who thirsts, and he who has no money, come (Isaiah 55:1), which names the exact person it is addressed to. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that plain to somebody who has been avoiding the notifications.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are sitting, with your hands open. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and never sold, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the reflex you have built, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about yourself, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the months after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Reflex that checks every invitation for the cost, you are not reading this one. God said come and buy without money and without price, He said the word without twice, and there is nothing in this to work out.
- Belief that a girl with nothing spare is a girl who should stay out of the way, you are not sitting on this bench. It is written that while we were still weak, Christ died for the ungodly, and the Spirit is the One who makes that about me tonight and not about people in general.
- Jesus, You said come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and the only qualification You named was being worn out. I come in Your name with both hands open and nothing in them, because there is no entry price, and nobody ever had to explain themselves at that door.
