The Filter I Developed

This message is for a woman who has developed an automatic filter that skips past any verse with abundance, storehouses or overflowing in it, and who has just worked out how much of her own Bible she has quietly ruled out of bounds for herself

She noticed it because of the highlighting.

She has a system, and she has had it since she was twenty-two, and it is a good one: yellow for what God is like, blue for what she is meant to do, pink for the ones she wants to be able to find again.

She was flicking back through a couple of years of it on a Sunday afternoon, not looking for anything, and she noticed that there are whole stretches with nothing on them at all.

Not the boring bits. She highlights the boring bits. She has yellow in the middle of a list of place names.

The empty stretches are the ones with plenty in them.

Barns. Storehouses. Overflowing. Abundance. Enough and to spare. Tables prepared. Cups running over. Whole passages, some of them famous ones, with not one mark from three colors of pen across two years.

And she sat there on a Sunday afternoon and worked out, in about ninety seconds, that she has been operating a filter.

Not deciding. Not arguing with any of it. Just sliding past, the way your eye slides past a shop you cannot go into, because at some point in the last few years those pages stopped feeling as though they were addressed to her.

She has ruled about a fifth of her own Bible out of bounds and never once said so out loud.

And you know that, because there are pages you skip without deciding to, and you have never counted how many.

The Filter I Developed

Nothing in that book is addressed past you

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique, and there is nothing on it for you to bring.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in that famous sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.

And this is the promise this page keeps to the last line, and this whole site keeps on every page. No appeal, no ask, nothing smaller instead, nothing to volunteer, nothing to sign. You can read it all the way to the bottom and nobody will want anything from you.

Now the verse in its own room, since it is one of the ones your pen has been avoiding.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Said to a nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch, never a means test, and never once about what is or is not in your hands.

Now the filter, because that is the actual subject and it deserves the good news rather than a rebuke.

God has never once put a price on the door He is inviting you through, and He has never written a page that was addressed past you to somebody better off. Look at the shape of how He opens: come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). That is the most abundant sentence in the prophets and it is addressed, by name, to the person with nothing. The plenty and the person with empty hands are in the same line. It is the Holy Spirit, and not this page, who takes that and lays it over a highlighted page on a Sunday afternoon.

And the same thing happens at the end of the book. The last invitation in the Bible is let the one who desires take the water of life without price (Revelation 22:17). The word for what is on offer is life, and the price named is nothing.

You are welcome exactly as you are today, and there is no version of you that would be more welcome, including the version those pages seem to be describing. It is written that by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8). Four bolts on the same door: not your doing, a gift, not works, no boasting. His Spirit is what makes that read as relief rather than as a doctrine you could already teach.

Now the thing your pen has been telling you for two years.

God has not moved further off because your hands are empty, and He has never once addressed His own book over your head. It is written that all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable (2 Timothy 3:16), with no schedule attached listing which parts belong to which income. And it is written that He is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth (Psalm 145:18), with no clause underneath about circumstances. The Spirit is the one who makes that a page you are allowed to read rather than a page about people who are doing better.

And here is the one that matters most on a Sunday afternoon with three pens on the arm of the chair.

Jesus said, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). Not bring. Come. The only qualification named is being worn out, and running a filter for two years without knowing it is worn out.

Now the guardrail, and it matters more here than anywhere else on this site.

Nothing on this page is going to suggest what you could do instead, or offer, or manage. Nobody is going to give you a reading plan, because that is a thing to bring. Nobody here is going to admire how you are coping. Your situation is not a lesson and it is not somebody else's illustration, and you are not being looked at. You are being spoken to. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that true in a person rather than merely accurate on a page.

And nobody here is going to predict that your circumstances change, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that, and nothing on this site will ever tell you that a page is about to come true for you. What is written is what is being said: God is close, there is no entry price, and He is not rationing His nearness.

The breakthrough

So put the pens down and read the page.

God is close to you this afternoon, with nothing in your hands, exactly as you are, and He did not draw near on the strength of what you have and He is not talking over your head to somebody else on those pages.

The invitation is His. The proving is His. The coming costs nothing, it has never cost anything, and there is not one line in that book addressed past you.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It has been true across every page you have skipped.

You are not the person those skipped verses were written past, and the filter was built out of what was done with them rather than what they say. It is written, come, buy and eat without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). The Holy Spirit is the One who gives a woman a page back that somebody else made unreadable.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are sitting, with your hands open. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and never sold, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the filter you built, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about your own place in His book, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the months after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Filter that skips a verse the moment it mentions plenty, you are switched off. God put the most abundant sentence in the prophets and the person with no money in the very same line, and I am not sliding past my own name.
  2. Belief that whole pages of that book are addressed over my head to somebody doing better, you are not sitting in this chair. It is written that He is near to all who call on Him, and there is no clause underneath that one about circumstances.
  3. Jesus, You said come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and the only qualification You named was being worn out. I come in Your name with both hands open and nothing in them, because there is no entry price, and there was never a rule about the chairs.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
