The rack is still on the wall.
That is the part. He could have taken it down in about four minutes with a screwdriver he no longer has, and it has been up there since March with the shapes still on the board behind it where the paint did not fade.
You can see exactly what was where. That is what a shadow board does. It is supposed to help you notice when something is missing.
He sold the good saw first, because it was worth the most, and after that it got easier in the way that things do once you have crossed a line you swore you would not cross.
He is not going to go into how it happened. It happened the way it happens: slowly, and then quickly, and the last bit was not his fault and the first bit possibly was, and going round it again at night has never once produced a new answer.
He goes out to the shed most days. Sweeps it. There is nothing to sweep. Stands there with his hands in his pockets looking at the board.
And here is what has been forming in him since about June, and he would not be able to say it out loud without his voice going, so he has not.
He has started to think that a man is what is hanging on his wall.
And since there is nothing hanging on it, there is not much of him left to take anywhere. Certainly not to God. What would he even walk in with.
And you know that exactly, because there is a wall in your life with the shapes still on it.

A man is not what is hanging on his wall
Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique, and there is nothing on it for you to bring.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in that famous sentence and it lands square on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.
And here is the promise this page keeps to the last line, and this whole site keeps on every page. No appeal. No ask. Nothing smaller instead, nothing to volunteer, nothing to sign. If you came in bracing for the part where something is wanted, you can put it down at the door, because it never arrives.
Now the verse in its own room.
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Said to a whole nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had gone empty and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch on a wall, and it has never had one thing to do with what is or is not on yours.
Now the door.
God has never once put a price on the door He is inviting you through, and He is not on the other side of it checking your hands. Hear what He calls out, and hear who He calls: come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). He names the man with nothing out loud, in the invitation itself, before the goods are even mentioned. It is the Holy Spirit, and not this page, who takes a line like that and stands it in the doorway of a swept shed.
And that is how the whole book ends. The last invitation in the Bible is let the one who desires take the water of life without price (Revelation 22:17). Last page, no charge, and the only qualification named is wanting it.
You are welcome exactly as you are today, and there is no version of you that would be more welcome, including the one from before March. It is written that by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8). Count how hard that sentence works: not your doing, a gift, not works, no boasting. Four bolts on the same door, and the Spirit is what makes it read as relief rather than as a lesson.
Now the thing that has been forming in you since June.
God has not moved further off because your hands are empty, and He has never once measured a man by what is on his board. It is written that the Lord does not see as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). That was said in a yard, about a lad nobody had even bothered to call in from the field, in front of his older and more impressive brothers. His Spirit is the one who makes that a sentence about a shed rather than a sentence about a shepherd.
And there is one more, and it is the one for a man standing in a doorway.
Jesus said, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). Not bring. Come. The only qualification in that whole sentence is being worn out, and standing in an empty shed at four in the afternoon most days is worn out.
Now the guardrail, and it matters more here than anywhere else on this site.
Nothing here is going to suggest what you could do instead, or offer, or manage. Nobody is going to tell you what a man can still give when he has nothing, because that is an ask wearing a cardigan. Nobody here is going to admire your resilience. Your situation is not a lesson and it is not an illustration for anybody else, and you are not being looked at. You are being spoken to. It is the Holy Spirit, not anybody writing, who takes what is written and makes it land in the room you are actually in.
And nobody here is going to predict that any of it turns, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that. What is written is what is being said: God is close, there is no entry price, and He is not rationing His nearness.
So stand in the shed and let the board be a board.
God is close to you today, with nothing on the wall and nothing in your hands, and He did not turn up on the strength of what was hanging there and He has not left because it is gone.
The invitation is His. The proving is His. The coming costs nothing, it has never cost anything, and there is no version of this page where something is wanted at the end.
Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It has been true since March.
You are not less to God since March, and an empty rack on a shed wall is not a statement about you. It is written, come, everyone who thirsts, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). The Holy Spirit is the One who says that to a man standing in front of the wall again.
Come and look. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are standing, with your hands open. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was handed to you and never sold, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to cover over. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a man. Speak first to the wall, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about yourself since June, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the months after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Empty rack on that wall, you are not a description of me. It is written that man looks on the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart, and He said that in a yard about a lad nobody had bothered to call in.
- Idea that a man with nothing in his hands has nothing to take anywhere, you are not standing in this shed. God called out to the one with no money before He named the goods, and the Spirit is the One who makes that an invitation with my name in it.
- Jesus, You said come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and the only qualification You named was being worn out. I come in Your name with both hands open and nothing in them, because there is no entry price, and the ground does not know the difference and neither do You.
