Nothing To Bring

It stopped so gradually that she cannot give you a date, which is the thing that bothers her most about it.

There was no moment. Nothing happened. She did not fall out with God and she has not stopped believing any of it and she would still describe herself, if a form asked her, exactly the way she always has.

She just does not pray now.

And when she has actually sat down and made herself look at why, which she has done twice, in the way you make yourself look at a bill, the answer that comes up is not doubt and it is not anger.

It is manners.

It is the feeling that she has nothing to bring. Not to give, exactly. She is not thinking about that at all. She means the other kind of bringing: news, progress, something to report, a change since last time, some evidence that the conversation is going anywhere.

She has none. Her circumstances have been the same for two years and are likely to stay the same, and there is nothing new to say about them, and she has said all of it, and she cannot face arriving again with the same empty hands and the same three sentences.

It feels like turning up at somebody's door for the fourth week running with nothing.

So she does not.

And you know that feeling, because you have stopped going somewhere on the grounds that you had nothing new to bring.

Empty hands are still hands

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique, and there is nothing on it for you to bring.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in that famous sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written that He said, put me to the test (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that an offer a person can actually accept rather than a line they can only quote.

And this is the promise the page keeps to the last line, and the whole site keeps on every page. No appeal, no ask, nothing smaller instead, nothing to sign, and nothing expected. You do not have to have anything to report to read this and you will not be asked for a summary at the end.

Now the verse in its own room.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

Said to a whole nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch on a wall, and it has never had anything to do with what you arrive holding.

Now the manners, because they are the real subject.

God has never once put a price on the door He is inviting you through, and He has never expected anybody to arrive with news. Read what He calls out: come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). Thirst is the only thing named on the arriving person's side of that sentence. Not progress. Not an update. Thirst. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes a line like that off a page and gets it into a quiet room at four in the afternoon.

And it is how the entire book ends. The last invitation in the Bible is let the one who desires take the water of life without price (Revelation 22:17). Last page. The only qualification named is wanting it.

You are welcome exactly as you are today, and there is no version of you that would be more welcome, including the one with something to report. It is written that by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8). Not your doing, a gift, not works, no boasting. His Spirit is the one who makes that land as relief rather than as a lesson you already knew.

Now the two years of the same three sentences.

God has not moved further off because your hands are empty, and He has never once been bored by anybody. It is written that in every situation, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6), and every situation has no clause underneath it excluding the unchanged ones. And it is written that the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26), which is a description of a person arriving with nothing sayable, and the answer given is not that they should come back when they have something. The answer is that God has already put somebody alongside them to do the speaking.

And this is the one for a woman who cannot face arriving again.

Jesus said, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). Not bring. Come. The only qualification in that sentence is being worn out, and two years of the same is being worn out.

Now the guardrail, and it matters more here than anywhere else on this site.

Nothing on this page is going to suggest what you could bring instead. Not a small thing, not a habit, not a routine to try. Nobody here is going to give you a method for praying better, because a method is a thing to bring. Your situation is not a lesson and it is not somebody else's illustration, and you are not being looked at. You are being spoken to. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that true in a person rather than merely accurate on a page.

And nobody here is going to predict that your circumstances change, because nobody writing to you has the right to say that. What is written is what is being said: God is close, there is no entry price, and He is not rationing His nearness to people with news.
