He does it about five times an evening and he has started counting, which is a bad sign.
Opens the fridge. Stands there. The light comes on, which it does, that yellow that makes everything look better than it is. Looks at what is in there, which he already knows, because he put it there and he knows exactly what it is and exactly how long it has to last.
Shuts it.
He is not hungry, particularly. That is not what this is. He has worked out, standing there for the third time tonight, that he is checking whether it has changed, and he knows perfectly well that it has not, and he keeps going back.
The kids are fine. He wants that stated. They are actually fine, they eat properly, they are noisy and rude and doing well at school and the older one has started saying things at the table that make him laugh out loud.
It is not about them. It is about him standing in a kitchen at nine at night in front of an open fridge with the light on his face.
And here is the thought that has been settling on him for a few months, and it is not dramatic and it is worse for not being dramatic.
A man in his position ought to keep out of the way.
Out of the way of people who might feel awkward. Out of the way of anything that costs. And, he has noticed lately, out of the way of God, in some manner he could not explain if you asked him, but which comes down to not putting himself forward.
And you know that, because there is a room in your life you have started keeping out of.

You do not have to keep out of the way
Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique, and there is nothing on it for you to bring.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in the famous sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.
And this is the promise this page keeps to the last line, and this whole site keeps on every page. No appeal. No ask. Nothing smaller instead, nothing to volunteer, nothing to sign, and nothing at the bottom. You can read the whole of it and put your phone down and nobody will have wanted anything from you.
Now the verse in its own room.
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Said to a whole nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a switch, never a door charge, and never once about what is or is not in your fridge.
Now the keeping out of the way.
God has never once put a price on the door He is inviting you through, and He has never asked anybody to stand further back. Hear who He calls, and hear that He calls them first: come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come, buy and eat, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). The person with nothing is not tolerated at the edge of that sentence. He is named in it, out loud, before the goods are. It is the Holy Spirit, and not this paragraph, who takes a line like that off a page and stands it in a kitchen at nine at night.
And that is how the book finishes. The last invitation in the Bible is let the one who desires take the water of life without price (Revelation 22:17). Last page, no charge, and the only qualification is wanting it.
You are welcome exactly as you are tonight, and there is no version of you that would be more welcome, including the version with a full fridge. It is written that by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8). Not your doing, a gift, not works, no boasting. Four bolts on the same door. His Spirit is what makes that read as relief rather than as instruction.
Now the thing that has been settling on you for months.
God has not moved further off because your hands are empty, and He has never once wanted you at the back of the room. It is written that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Near. Not available on request from a distance. And it is written that He is near to all who call on Him (Psalm 145:18), with no clause underneath about circumstances. The Spirit is the one who makes that a kitchen rather than a category.
And here is the one that belongs to a man who has been standing in front of a fridge.
Jesus said, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). Not bring. Come. The only qualification in that sentence is being worn out, and counting how many times you have opened a fridge is worn out. The Holy Spirit is the One who takes a line spoken in one decade and makes it live in an ordinary room today.
Now the guardrail, and it matters more here than anywhere else on this site.
Nothing on this page is going to suggest what you could do instead, or offer, or manage. Nobody here is going to tell you that a man in your position still has plenty to give, because that is an ask in a soft coat. Nobody is going to admire how you are handling it. Your situation is not a lesson and it is not anybody else's illustration. You are not being looked at. You are being spoken to. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that true in a person rather than merely accurate on a page.
And nobody here is going to predict that it changes, because nobody writing to you has been given the right to say that. What is written is what is being said: God is close, there is no entry price, and He is not rationing His nearness at nine at night.
So shut the fridge and sit down at your own table.
God is close to you tonight, with nothing in your hands, exactly as you are, and He did not come near on the strength of what was in the house and He is not standing further off now.
The invitation is His. The proving is His. The coming costs nothing, it has never cost anything, and there is no version of this page where something is wanted at the end.
Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It was true the first time you opened it this evening.
You are not measured by what is on those shelves, and God has not weighed you against a fridge. It is written, come, buy and eat without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1), addressed by name to the one who has nothing. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes that reach a man standing in a kitchen at nine at night.
Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are standing, with your hands open. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and never sold, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the instinct you have developed, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about yourself, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the months after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Instinct to keep out of the way, you are not standing in this kitchen tonight. It is written that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and near is not a word that leaves anybody at the back of a room.
- Idea that a man in my position should not put himself forward with God, you are shut in with the fridge door. God named the one with no money out loud in His own invitation, and the Spirit is the One who puts my name where that name is.
- Jesus, You said come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and the only qualification You named was being worn out. I come in Your name with both hands open and nothing in them, because there is no entry price, and I am already wet.
