Heaven OpenedMalachi 3:10

The First Song And The Last Five Minutes

This message is for a girl of twenty in a field at a festival who felt something real and quiet during the first song of the night, and then heard an open heaven described over her in the last five minutes entirely as things she would receive, and cannot work out why she came away flat

She is twenty, and she is in a field, and it is the good part of the evening where the light has gone gold and everything looks better than it is.

And the first song happens.

It is not a big one. It is the one they always open with, and half the field is still finding people and getting their shoes off, and she is standing there in the middle of that not-quite-ready noise and something happens in her chest that she does not have a word for.

It is quiet. That is the strange bit. There are two thousand people in this field and the thing that arrives is quiet, and it is not about anything, and it is not about her, and it lasts maybe forty seconds, and she stands very still for all of it.

Then the evening goes on and it is a good evening.

And in the last five minutes, a man on the stage prays an open heaven over the field, and he is warm and he means it and everybody puts their hands up including her.

And he describes it. He describes what is coming. Opportunity. Provision. A shift. Things named and named and named, and the field roars, and she has her hands up and her eyes shut and something in her goes flat, and she does not know why, and she feels rotten about it.

She is still thinking about it on the coach.

Not about the last five minutes. About the first song.

And you know that, because there is something you have felt once for forty seconds that nobody has ever offered to give you more of.

The First Song And The Last Five Minutes

An open heaven is God arriving, not a delivery slot

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique and nothing on it is being asked of you.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. There is no appeal at the bottom of this page and nothing to sign anywhere on it. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.

Now the phrase, because it has been decorated by other people for so long that it has almost stopped meaning anything.

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

That was spoken to a nation in one decade about one building, where the store room had gone empty and the families who served there had gone home hungry, and what was named in it was that the fields would not fail again. It is a sentence about people eating. It was never a lever, and nothing you have or have not done has ever operated it. The Holy Spirit is the One who takes a line spoken in one decade and makes it live in an ordinary room today.

So the honest question is what an open heaven is actually for in Scripture, when it is not being described by somebody with a microphone.

Look at every place the sky opens in the Bible. It is the same thing every single time, and it is not a delivery.

At the Jordan, the heavens are torn open, the Spirit comes down like a dove, and a voice says, this is my beloved Son (Matthew 3:16). Nothing is handed over. Somebody is named, and God is there.

Stephen, at the very end, looks up and says, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:56). Nothing arrives in his hands. He sees a Person, and it is enough to hold him through the worst hour of his life.

Jacob, asleep on a stone in an ordinary field, sees a stairway and wakes up and says, surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it (Genesis 28:16). He does not wake up richer. He wakes up with a God who was already in the field he was lying in.

What comes down through an open heaven is God Himself, and He has never once sent something instead of coming. It is written that He will pour out His Spirit on all flesh (Joel 2:28), and on the day that finally happened there was wind and fire and God in a room, and the crowd outside did not report deliveries. They reported people talking about the mighty works of God. It is the Holy Spirit, not this paragraph, who takes a phrase off a page and makes it forty seconds in a field.

Now the part that is actually about you.

The forty seconds during the first song was not the warm-up, it was the thing, and you were not wrong to want more of that than of anything named later. The psalmist said one thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord (Psalm 27:4). A man with a kingdom's worth of problems narrowed his whole list down to a face. The Spirit is the one who makes that a permission rather than a poem for somebody older than you.

And the flatness at the end of the evening was not a failure of yours.

You are not less spiritual for going quiet when a room gets loud, and God has never required volume as evidence. It is written that He was not in the wind, and not in the earthquake, and not in the fire, and that after the fire there came a low whisper (1 Kings 19:12). That is not a criticism of noise; it is a description of how God has repeatedly chosen to arrive. His Spirit is the one who makes that read like permission to trust what happened in you rather than what happened around you.

Now the guardrail, and it is the reason this whole site exists.

Nothing here connects what you have or have not put anywhere to what God does, in either direction. Nothing on this page predicts anything arriving for you, and nothing on it will tell you a season is about to turn, because nobody writing to you has the right to say that. What is being said is what is written: God pours out Himself, His nearness is the gift and not the deposit on one, and He is not rationing it. It is the Holy Spirit, and not the writing, who turns what is on the page into something that holds weight.

And for the reader who came here with their jaw set: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint you misread the terms. Nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome here exactly as it is.

The breakthrough

So stop being embarrassed on the coach and say the true thing.

An open heaven is not a delivery slot, and what comes down through it is not furniture. It is God, and He is not rationing Himself, and He is not sending a description of Himself on ahead.

You are allowed to want Him more than you want a shift in your circumstances. That is not immaturity. It is the truest thing about you, and it is exactly what the sky opens for.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It was true during the first song while half the field was still finding their shoes.

You were not imagining what happened in the first song, and it was not the warm-up to the real thing. It is written that God has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing (Acts 2:33), and the pouring out was the Spirit. The Holy Spirit was in the quiet part of that field, and He is not saving Himself for a bigger moment.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you are standing. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned, which is exactly what this verse has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the description you were handed, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about your own quietness, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the weeks after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Description of an open heaven made out of deliveries, you are not what I stood in that field for. What God pours out is Himself, He is not rationing it, and I am not spending my twenties wanting the packaging.
  2. Verdict that going quiet when a room gets loud means something is wrong with me, you are not getting on the coach. It is written that after the fire there came a low whisper, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a description of how God comes rather than a comment on how I am.
  3. Jesus, You tore the sky open at a river and the Father said, this is My Son, and that is what an open heaven has always been for. I stand under it in Your name with nothing in my hands, because the nearness is the gift, and the list was only ever things to do in front of what I came for.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
