He is walking the track because the light is good and there is nothing to do until Thursday, and he goes past the corner by the old pit where the ground is always wet, and something arrives out of nowhere.
Not a thought. A year.
The one where it all came at once. He would have to work out the date and he could if he sat down with the papers, but he does not need the number, he can feel the shape of it: three things in about eleven weeks, and the last of the three landing in the second week of January, and a fortnight in there where he honestly did not know whether they would still have the place by the spring.
They have the place. He is standing on it.
And that is the thing that has him stopped in a farm track in February with his hands in his pockets and the dog looking back at him wondering why he has stopped.
Nobody ever said it.
They got through, and then it was March and there was work to do, and then it was a year later, and then it was several, and in all of that time not one person in that house has ever said out loud: we came through that.
Not his wife. Not him. Not the boys, who were young enough at the time that they may not even know it happened.
It went straight from being unbearable to being a thing that was over, without ever once being named.
And you know that exactly, because you came through something and the house never said so.

The things that never got named
Let us settle what governs this whole page. Nothing on it is being asked of you, there is no appeal at the bottom, and nobody here is going to make your list for you.
You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in that famous sentence and it lands square on Him. He is under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who lets a reader hear that verb land where it actually lands.
Here it is, in its own room:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10
Said to a nation, in one decade, about one building, where the store room had emptied and the families who worked there had gone home hungry. It is a sentence about people eating, and it was never a lever.
And here is what belongs to this page.
God had already been faithful to those people for centuries before He ever invited them to test Him, and He was already faithful to you long before you stopped in a track in February. That invitation sits at the end of a very long book, spoken to people whose whole history is a record of what He had already done. The test was never the start of His faithfulness. It was a nudge to notice what was already there. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes that and stands it by a wet corner near an old pit.
Now the not naming, and it needs saying straight because it is very common in houses like yours.
It is not ingratitude. Nobody on this page is going to suggest that, and if anybody has ever hinted that a man who does not talk about these things is a man who has not noticed them, they were wrong.
What it is, is that hard things end untidily. There is no moment. Nobody rings a bell. The work starts again, and the work is loud, and by the time there is a quiet afternoon the thing has stopped being current and it feels odd to raise it.
Scripture is unusually practical about this, and the practicality is the point.
God knows people forget, and He has repeatedly told them to put something physical in the way of it. After the river, twelve stones were carried out and stacked at the crossing, and the reason given is that when your children ask in time to come, what do these stones mean, you shall tell them (Joshua 4:6). It is a heap of rocks in a field so that a thing would get said out loud. And after a hard day at Mizpah, a man set up a stone and called it Ebenezer and said, till now the Lord has helped us (1 Samuel 7:12). Not a prediction. A marker on what had already happened. His Spirit is what makes that a thing to do on a Tuesday rather than a fact about the ancient world.
And here is the passage for a man who has never gone back over it.
He asked them. When I sent you out with no purse, He said, did you lack anything? And they said, nothing (Luke 22:35).
They had not gone over it either. It had to be raised, and when it was raised the answer came straight back, because it had been there the whole time.
You are not being asked to feel anything, you are being asked to go back over it, and those are two different jobs. It is written that you shall remember the whole way the Lord your God has led you (Deuteronomy 8:2), and remembering there has boots on. His Spirit is what makes it a walk rather than a mood.
Now the guardrails, because they are the reason this page hands you less than it could.
Nobody here is going to name your three. If this article gave you them, you would have three of somebody else's and an empty page, which is what you started with.
And nobody here is going to turn them into a pattern. When you have them, they will not tell you what this year does, they are not a system, and they do not add up to a forecast. They are three things that happened. That is enough, and it is a great deal more than nothing. It is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who carries a sentence like that out of its own century and sets it down where you are standing.
God proved Himself to you in that winter long before anybody put the question, and the finding out is looking rather than earning. It is written that He is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8), so whatever you come back with is not a run of good luck. It is the same One who was on this ground in January.
So stand in the track and let it be said.
The silence over that winter was not ingratitude and it was not stoicism. It is what happens when a thing ends untidily in a house with work to do, and God was in every one of those eleven weeks whether or not one word of it has ever been spoken out loud.
He proved Himself long before anybody suggested testing Him. The stopping in the track was not the start of it. It is an invitation to go back over something that already happened on this ground.
Nothing is required of you for that to be true, and nothing on this page will go back over it for you.
You have a winter behind you that you came through, and God was on this ground through every week of it whether or not one word of it has ever been said. It is written that He is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8), so what happened in January was not a run of luck. The Holy Spirit is the One who stands that beside a wet corner near an old pit.
Come and look. He has nothing behind His back.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the track you are standing in, or in the kitchen with the paper. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was handed to you and never earned, which is exactly the thing this verse has been used to cover over. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a man. Speak first to the silence, then to the thing you have quietly assumed about your own years, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.
- Silence over that winter, you are not going to keep it from being said. God had been faithful for centuries before He ever invited anybody to test Him, and He was on this ground in January whether or not anybody named it.
- Habit of going from unbearable to over without a word in between, you are stopping at this corner. It is written that a man set up a stone and said, till now the Lord has helped us, and he did that so a thing would get said out loud.
- Jesus, You asked them straight out whether they had lacked anything, and they had not gone back over it either until You raised it. You proved Yourself long before anybody told me to test You, and in Your name I am sitting down at that table tonight with a pen and a piece of paper and writing three of them down.
