The Full TableMalachi 3:10

The Ones Who Serve Eat Last

This message is for a woman washing up alone in a church kitchen after the Sunday dinner she has cooked for nineteen years, who has eaten standing up at the sink every single one of them, and who has never been told that the whole complaint of Malachi 3 is about the people who serve going home hungry

Everybody has gone and the urn is still ticking as it cools, and she is at the sink with her sleeves pushed up doing the big pans, which are the ones nobody else can do because of the weight.

Nineteen years.

Third Sunday of the month, dinner for anything between forty and seventy, and she has cooked every single one of them except the three when her mother was dying and one when the boiler went.

She is good at it. She is more than good at it. She can tell you exactly how many potatoes seventy people eat and she has never once been wrong by more than a pan.

And she is eating now, because she has not eaten yet. Standing at the sink, out of the corner of a plate she balanced on the drainer, in between pans, the way she always does.

Nineteen years of Sunday dinners and she has eaten every one of them standing up.

She would tell you cheerfully that she does not mind and that she is not a sitting-down sort of person and that somebody has to get on with the pans, and every bit of that is true.

And then this afternoon, out of nowhere, with her hands in the water, she thinks about the verse they read this morning. The storehouse one. And she thinks about the phrase that was in it, the one she has heard so many times it has gone smooth like a step.

Food in my house.

And she stops with a pan half out of the water, because for the first time in her life she thinks to ask: food for whom?

And you know that, because there is a house you have fed for years and never once sat down in.

The Ones Who Serve Eat Last

The complaint was about the servers going hungry

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique and there is nothing on it for you to carry.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. Nothing is being asked of you on this page: no appeal at the bottom, no rota, no request three paragraphs down where a woman usually stops bracing. It is written that He said, put me to the test (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that an offer a person can actually accept rather than a line they can only quote.

Now the building, because that part almost never gets read out with the sentence.

Malachi speaks at the tired end of a long story. The exile is over, the people are home, the temple has been rebuilt. And the building is up and it is not working.

Here is why. The people who served in that house were not given land. That was the arrangement from the start: eleven tribes farmed, one tribe served, and the one that served had no fields to fall back on. What they had instead was a store room at the side of the building. Grain, oil, wine, brought in by everybody else, and eaten by the families who worked there.

And it had gone empty.

So those families did the only thing a family can do. They went home. Back to a cousin's ground, back to whatever work there was, because you cannot let your children go without while you keep a building running.

The lamps went low. The singing stopped. The house that was meant to be the loudest evidence on earth that God was among His people limped along half staffed, because the pantry was bare.

Now read the sentence standing in that room:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

That there may be food in my house. Food for whom? Not for God. He does not eat. He says so plainly elsewhere: if I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine (Psalm 50:12). The food in that sentence was for the people who worked there. The whole complaint of that chapter is that the ones who served had gone home with nothing.

You have heard that phrase go past you smooth as a worn step for nineteen years, and every single time it was about somebody exactly like you. Scripture is not embarrassed by its own setting: it names the store, the hunger, the going home. The Holy Spirit has never needed a verse lifted out of a kitchen before He could make it burn.

And look at what that says about the God who is speaking.

He is not a proprietor doing His accounts. He is a Father who came into His own house, found out that the people who keep it have gone home hungry, and would not let it pass. It was not the arithmetic that offended Him. It was the empty plates.

God has always cared that real people are fed, and in that chapter the people He was counting were the ones doing the serving. It is written that He gives food to every creature, for His steadfast love endures forever (Psalm 136:25), and that includes the woman with her hands in the water and a plate balanced on the drainer. It is the Holy Spirit who takes a line like that and turns it around in a kitchen until it is facing the one person in the building who never thought it was about her.

He does it right through Scripture. Bread on a desert floor for forty years, with a rule about how much a household may gather (Exodus 16). A widow's flour and oil that will not run out, a day at a time (1 Kings 17). Five thousand told to sit down on the grass. And after the resurrection, with all of eternity available to Him as a subject, Jesus cooks fish on a beach at dawn and says, come and have breakfast (John 21:12). He was not too important for the fire. He did the cooking.

You are not the staff in the house of God, you are the daughter, and there is no arrangement anywhere in Scripture where the ones who serve eat last. Jesus said He would come and gird Himself and have them sit down to eat, and would come and serve them (Luke 12:37), which is either the most extraordinary sentence in the Gospels or a mistranslation, and it is not a mistranslation. The Spirit is the one who makes that a chair with your name on it rather than a lovely idea about somebody.

Now the guardrail, and it is not decoration.

Nothing on this site connects what you have or have not put anywhere to what God does for you. That store room was one nation's practical arrangement for feeding people who were not permitted to farm, in one decade, in one city. It was never a mechanism. Nothing you have ever handed over has filled or failed to fill a storehouse in heaven, and if somebody once used that chapter to say otherwise, they were reading a house rule as a lever, and you are not on the hook for it.

Nothing is asked of you here, and God's concern about whether you eat has never depended on what you had spare or on how many pans you did. It is written that He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45), and His Spirit is the one who makes that include the kitchen you are standing in.

And for the reader who came here with her jaw set: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint you misread the terms. Nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome exactly as it is.

The breakthrough

So take your hands out of the water and let this land.

The God in that chapter is not running an exchange. He is a Father who walked into His own house, found out that the people who kept it had gone home hungry, and would not let it stand for one more season.

That is the God inviting you to come and find Him faithful. The invitation is His, the proving is His, and the concern in it was aimed, in that chapter, directly at the ones doing the work.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It was true through all nineteen years of pans.

You are one of the people that chapter was written to protect, not one of the people it was written to instruct. It is written that the storehouse was so that there may be food in my house (Malachi 3:10), and the ones going home hungry were the ones who did the work there. The Holy Spirit is the One who says that over a woman washing up alone after nineteen years.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen you are standing in, and then go and sit down. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned at any sink, which is exactly the thing this chapter has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the place you have always eaten, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about your own portion, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the days after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Sink I have eaten standing at for nineteen years, you are not my table. God said He wanted food in His house so the people who served there could eat, and that sentence has had my name in it the whole time.
  2. Belief that a woman who feeds a building is not one of the ones being fed, you are going out with the dishwater. It is written that He girds Himself, sits them down at the table and comes around it to serve them, and the Spirit is the One who makes that a chair rather than a lovely idea.
  3. Jesus, You cooked breakfast on a beach when You could have done anything at all, and that is the God I am dealing with. I sit down in Your name with my hands empty and my plate in front of me, because the invitation was Yours, the proving is Yours, and the ones who serve do not eat last in Your house.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
