The Room Behind The Shop

This message is for a shopkeeper standing in the back room his grandfather shelved out, counting what is there for the week ahead, who has heard that verse a hundred times and has never once pictured an actual room with actual jars in it and actual families depending on what is on the shelf

The shop is at the front and the room is at the back, and the room is the reason the shop works.

His grandfather shelved it out with his own hands in a year nobody in the family can now agree on, and the shelves are not square, and everybody knows which one leans, and nobody has ever fixed it because a leaning shelf built by your grandfather is not a fault, it is furniture.

Thursday morning is his counting morning. He goes through with a pencil and the old exercise book, and he counts what is there, because what is there is what the week is made of.

Two sacks of rice, one open. Lentils. The good oil and the everyday oil. Tea in the tin that used to be biscuits. Dates in the crate the man brings on the second Tuesday. Flour, and he is lower on flour than he would like.

And it is not stock to him, though it is stock. It is the widow on the corner who buys two things and talks for twenty minutes. It is the family with the four boys. It is the young couple who moved in above the launderette and do not know how to cook yet and are learning by buying the same three things over and over.

He counts, and it is people he is counting.

And this Thursday, halfway down the second shelf, with the pencil in his mouth, a word arrives that has been in his ears his whole life and has never once meant anything.

Storehouse.

He stops. He looks at the shelves.

That is a storehouse. This is a storehouse. He has been standing in one every Thursday of his adult life and he has never in forty years pictured the word as a room.

And you know that, because there is a word you have heard a hundred times in a verse and never once seen as a thing you could stand inside.

The Room Behind The Shop

It was a room, and it had gone empty

Let us settle what governs this whole page. It is not a technique and there is nothing on it for you to do.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. And nothing is being asked of you here: no appeal at the bottom, no request three paragraphs down, nothing to join and nothing to sign. It is written, and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and it is the Holy Spirit, not this page, who takes the sentence back off the people who borrowed it.

Now the building, because that is the part you were never handed.

Malachi speaks at the tired end of a long story. The exile is over, the people are back, the temple has been rebuilt, and the building is up and not working.

The reason is completely ordinary. The people who served in that house had no land. That was the arrangement from the beginning: eleven tribes farmed, one tribe served, and the one that served had no fields to fall back on. What they had instead was a room at the side of the building with shelves in it. Grain. Oil. Wine. Real food in real jars, brought in by everyone else, eaten by the families who worked there.

And it had gone empty.

So those families did what any family does when the food runs out. They went home. Back to a cousin's field, back to whatever work there was, because a man cannot let his children go hungry while he keeps lamps lit for a living.

The lamps went low. The singers stopped coming. The house that was supposed to be the loudest evidence in the world that God was among His people sat there half staffed, because the pantry was bare.

That is the room. Now hear the sentence standing in it:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

That there may be food in my house. The reason is inside the sentence, in plain words. Not so a total goes up somewhere. So that there is food. So that the man who trims the lamps has something to put in front of his children.

You have carried one line out of that chapter your whole life and never once the room it stood in, and that was never the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin. Scripture is not embarrassed by its own setting: it names the store, it names the hunger, it names the going home. The Holy Spirit has never needed a verse lifted out of the ordinary before He could make it burn.

And that changes what kind of God is speaking.

The complaint in that chapter is not that an account was in arrears. It is a Father coming into His own house and discovering that the people who keep it have gone home hungry, and it is not the arithmetic that has offended Him. It is the empty plates.

God has always cared that real people are fed, and He has never treated that as a small subject. It is written that He gives food to every creature, for His steadfast love endures forever (Psalm 136:25), and that sits in the middle of a song about seas parting and kings falling, because dinner genuinely matters to Him. It is the Holy Spirit who takes a line like that off the page and sets it on a leaning shelf on a Thursday morning.

He does it all the way through. Bread on a desert floor for forty years with instructions about how much a household may gather (Exodus 16). A widow's flour and oil that does not run out, one day at a time (1 Kings 17). Five thousand people told to sit down on the grass. And after the resurrection, with everything in existence available to Him as a subject, Jesus cooks fish over a fire on a beach at dawn and says, come and have breakfast (John 21:12).

The God of that chapter counts what is on the shelf, and He counts as you count, which is people. Jesus told an anxious crowd to look at the birds, who neither sow nor gather into barns, and said your heavenly Father feeds them, and are you not of more value than they (Matthew 6:26). The Spirit is what turns that from a nice remark about birds into a sentence about the week in front of you.

Now the guardrail, and it is not decoration.

Nothing on this site connects what you have or have not put anywhere to what God does for you. That store room was one nation's practical arrangement for feeding people who were not permitted to farm, in one decade, in one city. It was never a mechanism. Nothing you have ever handed to anybody has filled or failed to fill a storehouse in heaven, and if somebody once used that chapter to suggest otherwise, they were reading a house rule as a lever, and you are not on the hook for it.

Nothing is being asked of you here, and God's concern about whether you eat has never depended on what you had spare. It is written that He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45). That is a God whose kindness arrives on the whole street, and His Spirit is the one who makes that include the rooms above your own shop.

And for the reader arriving with their jaw set: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint that you misread the terms. Nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome at this counter exactly as it is.

The breakthrough

So put the pencil down and look at the shelves.

The God in that chapter is not running an exchange. He is a Father who walked into His own house, found that the people who kept it had gone home hungry, and would not let it stand.

That is the God inviting you to come and find Him faithful. The invitation is His. The proving is His. And His concern in it reaches all the way down to a room with shelves in it and a week that has to be made out of what is on them.

Nothing is required of you for that to be true. It was true before you picked up the exercise book.

You are standing in a back room your grandfather shelved out, and that is closer to the storehouse of that chapter than anything ever quoted at you. It is written that it was so that there may be food in my house (Malachi 3:10). The Holy Spirit is the One who gives a shopkeeper his own verse back while he is counting what is there for the week.

Come and see. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the room you are standing in. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned, which is exactly the thing this chapter has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the reading you were handed, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about your own ordinary week, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the days after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Idea that the storehouse is a ledger in the sky, you are not standing in my back room. God said He wanted food in His house so that people could eat, and I am handing you back to the Father whose subject was a shelf.
  2. Feeling that my ordinary week is beneath the notice of God, you are going out with the empty crates. It is written that He gives food to every creature and that His steadfast love endures forever, and the Spirit is the One who makes that reach a leaning shelf my grandfather built.
  3. Jesus, You cooked fish on a beach at dawn when You could have spoken about anything, and that is the God I am dealing with. I count this week in Your name and I bring nothing to the counting, because the invitation was Yours, the proving is Yours, and the One who holds the key knows exactly who is thirsty.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
