The Full TableMalachi 3:10

Three Lids, Three Names

This message is for a father packing three lunchboxes before six in the morning who reads the whole of Malachi 3 for the first time while the kettle boils, and finds that the chapter he has only ever heard one line of is, end to end, about whether actual people had anything to eat

Five fifty in the morning and he is doing the boxes.

Three of them, side by side on the counter, and they each have a name on the lid in permanent marker in his own handwriting from about four years ago, worn down now to a smudge on the middle one.

He has a system. Sandwich, fruit, the thing they will actually eat, and the thing he puts in anyway. The eldest will not touch tomato. The middle one will eat anything if it is cut into triangles and nothing at all if it is cut into squares, which is not a thing he has ever tried to understand.

The kettle is going and he has about four minutes and he does the thing he has started doing in those four minutes, which is read a chapter on his phone, propped against the bread bin.

He is at the back end of the Old Testament because he is going backwards this year, and this morning it is Malachi 3.

And he reads the whole thing.

Not the sentence. He knows the sentence. Everybody knows the sentence. He reads the paragraphs on either side of it, and the argument that starts before it, and the complaining that comes after it, all the way to the end.

And he puts the phone down and stands there with the knife in his hand.

Because that chapter is about food. Not in a poetic way. It is about whether specific people in a specific city had anything to eat that week, and about a store room that had gone empty, and about a God who noticed and would not let it go.

He looks at the three lids with the three names on them.

And you know exactly what has just happened to him, because you were handed one line out of a chapter years ago and never once the room it was standing in.

Three Lids, Three Names

The chapter is about whether anybody ate

Let us settle the thing that governs this page. It is not a technique, and there is nothing on it for you to do.

You are looking at an invitation, and the One being tested inside it is God. Follow the verb in the sentence and it lands on Him. He is the one under examination. He is the one who offered to be found out. Nothing is being asked of you on this page: no appeal at the bottom, no request three paragraphs down, nothing to join and nothing to sign. It is written, put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts (Malachi 3:10), and the Holy Spirit is the One who lets a reader hear that verb land where it actually lands.

Now here is the chapter with the walls back on it.

Malachi is the last voice at the tired end of a long national story. The exile is over. The people have come back and rebuilt the temple, and the building is up, and the building is not working.

Here is why. The people who served in that house had no fields. That was the arrangement, and it was deliberate: one tribe out of twelve got no land, so that they would be free to do nothing but this. What they had instead was a store room. Grain, oil, wine, the ordinary stuff of a kitchen, brought in by everybody else, kept in a room at the side of the house, and eaten by the families who worked there.

And it had gone empty.

So those families did the only thing a family can do when the food runs out. They went home. Back to whatever bit of land a cousin had, back to work, because a man cannot let his children go hungry while he tends lamps.

The lamps went low. The house went half staffed. The singers stopped coming. And a building that was meant to be the loudest evidence in the world that God was among His people sat there running on a skeleton crew because the pantry was bare.

That is the room. Now read the sentence in it:

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.Malachi 3:10

That there may be food in my house. That is the reason given, in the sentence itself, in plain words. Not so that heaven's accounts balance. So that there is food. So that the man who trims the lamps has something on the table when he gets in.

You have been handed one line out of that chapter your whole life and never once the room it stood in, and that was never the text being thin. It is the quoting that got thin. Scripture is not embarrassed by its own setting: it names the store room, it names the hunger, it names the going home. The Holy Spirit does not need a verse lifted out of the ordinary before He can make it burn.

And now watch what that does to your idea of God.

The complaint in that chapter is not that God was owed something and had not been paid. Read it and it is a father coming into a cold house and finding out that the people who serve Him have gone home hungry, and it is not the accounting that has offended Him. It is the empty plates.

God has always cared that real people are fed, and that has never been a metaphor with Him. It is written that He gives food to every creature, for His steadfast love endures forever (Psalm 136:25), which is a strange thing to put in the middle of a song about the Red Sea and the fall of kings, unless dinner genuinely matters to Him. It is the Holy Spirit who takes a line like that off a page and lands it on a counter with three lunchboxes on it.

Look at the whole of Scripture and you will find He keeps doing this. He rains bread on a desert for forty years and specifies how much a family may gather (Exodus 16). He sends a widow enough flour and oil for a day at a time and it does not run out (1 Kings 17). He asks a crowd of five thousand to sit down on the grass and then feeds them, and the first thing He does after the resurrection, standing on a beach at dawn with everything in the universe available to Him as a topic, is cook fish over a fire and say, come and have breakfast (John 21:12).

The God of that chapter is a God who counts plates, and He is counting yours this week. Jesus told a room full of anxious people to look at the birds, who neither sow nor reap, and said your heavenly Father feeds them, and are you not of more value than they (Matthew 6:26). And the Spirit is the one who makes that stop being a nice bird fact and start being about the specific week in front of you.

Now the guardrail on this page, and it is not decoration.

Nothing on this site connects what you have or have not put anywhere to what God does for you. That store room was a nation's arrangement for feeding a tribe of people who were not allowed to farm, in a decade, in a city. It was never a mechanism, and nothing you have ever handed to anybody has filled or failed to fill anybody's storehouse in heaven. If somebody once used that chapter to tell you otherwise, they were reading a house rule as a lever, and you are not on the hook for it.

You are not being asked for anything on this page and you never will be here, and God's care about whether you eat has never once depended on what you had spare. It is written that He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45), and that is a God whose kindness arrives on the whole street. His Spirit is the one who makes that read like it includes your house.

And for the reader coming here with their jaw set, because they are half of why this exists: some of you did what that verse was used to ask of you. Sincerely, at cost, and you watched, and nothing opened. Nobody here will explain that away, defend anybody, or hint that you misread the terms. Nobody will tell you it was too little or that you believed it wrong, because that is a lie and it has hurt enough people already. Your disappointment is welcome at this table exactly as it is.

The breakthrough

So put the knife down and look at the three lids again.

The God in that chapter is not running an exchange. He is a Father who walked into His own house, saw that the people in it had gone home hungry, and could not leave it alone.

That is who is inviting you to come and find Him faithful. The invitation is His, the proving is His, and the concern in it reaches all the way down to whether there is anything in the boxes on your counter.

Nothing is required of you for that concern to be true. It was true before you woke up.

You are packing three lunchboxes inside the same concern that whole chapter runs on. It is written that the storehouse existed so that there may be food in my house (Malachi 3:10), and the anxiety in that book was that people were going hungry. The Holy Spirit is the One who puts that beside three lids on a worktop before six in the morning.

Come and look. He has nothing behind His back.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen you are standing in. You have the right to speak them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not earned, which is exactly the thing this chapter has been used to obscure. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Speak first to the reading you were handed, then to the thing you have quietly concluded about your own ordinary week, and then turn and speak to Him. Whatever He does in the days after you say them is His, and it is not a scoreboard.

  1. Reading that made this chapter about heaven's cash flow, you are not standing in my kitchen at six in the morning. God said He wanted food in His house so that people could eat, and I am handing you back to the Father who counts plates.
  2. Suspicion that God is too large to be interested in what is in three lunchboxes, you are not staying in this house. It is written that He gives food to every creature and that His steadfast love endures forever, and the Spirit is the One who makes that reach as far as a counter with a loaf half cut on it.
  3. Jesus, You cooked fish on a beach at dawn and said come and have breakfast, and that is the God I am dealing with. I set this table in Your name and I bring nothing to it, because the invitation was Yours, the proving is Yours, and there is a place laid in Your house tonight in case somebody comes.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
